Exceptional firm to start a career at
Pros
I completed the 2 year analyst program at AGC and am extremely glad I spent the first years of my career there. The firm is extremely fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and has a very talented and hard-working junior team – all things I was looking for in a first job. As a middle-market M&A bank, AGC sees a ton of deal flow throughout technology, which quickly gives analysts very broad exposure and hands-on experience. Couple that with the lean deal teams and the significant trust that higher-ups put on lower level employees, and you end up with very competent analysts with exceptional skill sets. You will be a more confident and well-rounded analyst when compared to your peers (from my and others’ experience), and will have significantly more deal experience. There aren’t many other firms where you can close 10 deals in two years and play in integral role in each one. The smaller deal teams and active effort to get analysts involved in all aspects of the deal result in a very strong skill set. If you generate trust during your first year, you will be trusted with tasks that no other bank will let you touch. This allows you to accelerate your professional development beyond menial tasks like diligence and process organization – during my two years at AGC, I have modeled out several complicated businesses / transactions, lead buyer calls, developed close relationships with many of our client CEOs / executive teams, and supported LOI / definitive agreement negotiations. The firm is growing very rapidly, has seen strong deal flow (even throughout COVID and in the current bear market), and has a stellar reputation within the tech ecosystem. Would highly recommend AGC for anyone considering a career within banking, finance, or in technology more broadly.
Cons
Some people struggle with the long hours, quick timelines, limited training, and significant responsibility. First years can feel as if they’re drinking from a firehose – no one is holding your hand at AGC and you’re often expected to improve on your own or take on tasks you don’t know how to do. I personally found this to be a positive, and if you work well in this environment you will succeed at AGC. You will struggle if not.
