Very toxic

Pros

funds do actually go towards helping animals

Cons

Most people in management are wildly insecure because they don't know what they are doing. People play favorites and there is a "mean girl" mentality. I worked there for 2.5 years and I've never experienced such levels of unprofessionalism. Highly toxic work environment with really unskilled Senior Managers and Directors who will do anything to make sure upper management doesn't find out how little they are actually doing. My manager arrived to work everyday between 11 and 11:30 am, when everyone else is expected to be at their desks by 9:30am. Honestly it's just a gross culture.

Watch Your Back With Inexperienced Managers

Pros

Amazing mission, incredibly passionate co-workers.

Cons

CEO completely disconnected from what's happening in the trenches and doesn't seem to care. His only interest is in keeping the BOD exactly where he wants them so he doesn't get fired. Horrible, self-serving mid-level managers who don't know what they're doing, have no experience and are willing to throw anyone under the bus to save their jobs. "Do as I say not as I do" attitude. Rules don't apply to favorites. Unclear department goals and total lack of transparency or communication. Hypocritical Core Values culture. They espouse such caring but show little of it to their employees. I've seen it over and over again.

Management is a mess

Pros

The people are great to work with and I have made some lasting friendships with my colleagues. The animals are wonderful to interact with. Benefits are good. The common goal of helping animals is an admirable one.

Cons

It's a toxic atmosphere at the 92 Street location. Management is out of touch and doesn't seem to care about their many dissatisfied employees. Nearly every week I happen upon colleagues who are upset over managers behavior towards them or being overwhelmed by the quantity of work that needs to be done. There's an increasing stress on numbers and meeting quotas without giving employees the support and extra staff that they need to accomplish such things. Moving up or across the company really depends on what department you start in and whether your manager likes you. If you're unlucky, you get stuck in a position. If you're popular with the right people, the chance of being promoted is much higher. There seems to be a push to install core values into the company, but there's just a lot of talk there and not much action. It seems nice on paper to talk about these values, but then you look around and see many potentially strong employees are deeply unhappy.
