Pros

Compensation is pretty good, and it's fully remote. Great for someone who only wants to code in exchange for money, nothing more.

Cons

Over my two years I have seen so many managers come and go through the revolving door it's no wonder morale is at a all time low. Personally I have been passed on from manager to manager every few months for over a year. Stand in managers simply paid lip service but I felt they never really cared much at all. Recent cost cutting measures has forced the company to backtrack on some very recent promises, causing trust issues among employees.

Thanks so much for leaving an honest review—we truly value your feedback. The current macroeconomic conditions have prompted us to be more diligent in our spending as we build for durability and profitability amidst the challenging environment. We’ve had to make some hard trade-offs, but supporting our employees has been our key goal. We strongly feel that we do this best by providing consistent income and health benefits rather than focusing on short-term in-person gatherings and meals. We understand it’s frustrating to not be able to meet with coworkers in-person, and recognize the challenges that presents. Our People team will soon be introducing new programs that enable us to create a sustainable, lasting, and engaging remote-first experience that fosters genuine connection, no matter where in the world our people are located.

Pros

Individual contributors are overall good people to work with

Cons

Abnormal’s career page links to the Glassdoor reviews and it’s sorted by highest ratings first, which isn’t exactly “intellectually honest” as they claim their company values to be. Back in 2022 they had this huge push for everyone to leave positive reviews so of course, people did. So do yourself a favor, put on your skeptic hat and read the low reviews - or at least the recent reviews. Pay attention to the responses that Abnormal puts on reviews too. It doesn’t even address the issues brought up in the reviews here.

Thanks so much for leaving an honest review, we truly value your feedback. We are committed to developing a better company-wide listening strategy and optimizing the ways we collect employee feedback so we are better equipped to address these concerns as they arise—this includes reading through each and every review left here on Glassdoor and relaying them to the leadership team. Here are a few areas we are actively working to improve at Abnormal based on this recent feedback: 1. Creating a manager enablement program that addresses feedback we've received org-wide. We’re committed to creating an environment where our employees can thrive, and we know that can’t happen without effective, well-trained managers to guide them. 2. Continuing to establish and improve our performance review cycles to create an open feedback loop for employees, their managers, and their peers. 3. Establish clear career ladders across all teams at Abnormal in order to create more advancement opportunities for current employees. We also have active plans to support this by developing formal training, educational, and development programs. We genuinely appreciate your transparency and insight, and we are working hard to continue meeting the needs of our employees, especially as they shift and grow.

Pros

The only redeeming part of working at Abnormal used to be the people. Sadly a lot of them were laid off or “managed out” by the leadership with no particular cause or direction.

Cons

The lack of direction, basic competency, and absolute decision making chaos is one of the defining features of this company. I have absolutely no confidence in the CEO's ability to define solid direction for this company and then stick to it. This company hasn't shipped anything major in over two years. The lack of execution isn't just on the CEO. You can tell from other reviews here that engineering is being heavily micromanaged by the CTO whose planning and system design skills don't seem to go beyond “what can you hack together in a week”. As the direct result of this, the execution velocity has stalled, there are outages happening almost every single week, and every engineer who is within a vicinity of being on the pager is months into a solid burn out. Career growth: no matter how much they tell you that Abnormal Security is a “career enabler” if you're an engineer you will end up doing one of two things: 1. Hacking together some Django apps hoping you won't have to maintain them 2. Constantly fighting outages and customer escalations That's it. The reward for your hard work is nothing but more work. And good luck doing this for a few years and then trying to interview somewhere else.

Thanks so much for leaving an honest review—we truly value your feedback. Being in a reactive state is never the ideal. The downturn in the economy has impacted many organizations, including Abnormal. As a result, we’ve made some incredibly difficult decisions in order to consolidate functions for greater efficiency and match our team structure to changing business needs. Moving forward, we are making changes to adjust to the new phase of growth and build for durability so that all employees can feel confident both in the future of Abnormal and in their future with the company. We are also working hard to create a manager enablement program that addresses these issues. We’re committed to creating an environment where our employees can thrive, and we know that can’t happen without effective, well-trained managers to guide them. We’re sorry we didn’t get it right by you.
