Pros

The customers and fellow team members. Loved the interactions, loved teaching team members to grow and helping them succeed. Decent training programs for those that know little about automotive.

Cons

Maybe 5 years ago this company was still good. Now it is nothing more than an upper management politics, misguided cluster that only cares about shareholders and stock prices. They do not care at all about the team members below DM status though they ask for advice all the time, they never listen. They change policies every other period and can not stick to one plan. They offer low pay, long hours, and no chance for advancement (though they preach it all the time) unless you are part of the chosen few. They have been filling promotion positions from the outside and the employees that have worked for years and done everything they asked keep getting passed up and given some BS reason why, if they are even given a reason. They are a follower in the industry, always the last one to initiate a way to do business better that they borrow from their competitors that have done it first. Their computer system is so outdated and such a slow piece of junk that has problems everyday and tech support is in India and usually no help at all. It takes forever to take care of customers and a lot walk out rather than wait for our "internal issues". They also have major inventory issues. Though they preach that they have the best availability, it is a lie, sure they can order it if you want to wait a day or so, and half the time the shipping warehouse drops the ball and the part doesn't show up as promised. The stores stock more stupid accessories like frog keychains and seat buckets than they do actual parts to fix people's cars. And corporate does nothing to change it. And sales goals... are a joke. Totally overinflated and unobtainable. So if you are in management you are salary capped and won't get a raise, but they tell you that you can make so much money from bonus. Problem is, the goal is so high that you can never get there, and if your being hired as a GM or AGM and they tell you how much money you can make in bonus, don't believe it. They always find a way to cheat you out of it. The benefits are also horrendous. Our health plan price went way up and the coverage went way down. You could get better coverage in the marketplace yourself. The 401k is also a joke. Used to be dollar for dollar match, now you get 25 cents on dollar and thats only for GM's and above. Not to mention all the fees that go with it. I could go on and on about all this company's faults right now but it would take a book to write. I think the title says it all. I wasted 23 years of my life working for these unappreciative people and the day I walked out on them was one of my happiest days

Pros

If you're reasonably competent and reliable and have some automotive background, it tends to be relatively low-stress. As with any other job, environment depends on your compatibility with your co-workers and therefor is luck of the draw. I'm lucky enough to work with a good crew. Your experience may differ.

Cons

It's retail. If you have retail experience you already know what I mean and nothing more needs to be said. Beyond that, it suffers from the same disconnects between the head office and the frontline soldiers as any other large, geographically diverse business. You know, the common problems that everyone is aware of and nobody ever attempts to fix.
