Pros

I'm sure most hospitals have similar problems, but that doesn't make it ok.

Cons

Expectations are absurd. We get graded and reprimanded based on patient reviews that ARE NOT ACCURATE. Only a handful of patients return the survey every month, I dont understand how those can have any weight or that management takes them seriously as if they are a real description of what we do. We get daily tasks added VERY FREQUENTLY, but none are ever taken away. I ask: where is the TIME to do all that they expect, between so many patients (7 patients at night), so much charting, expectations like talking about all the side effects to all the meds that we pass every night, handing out information flyers, and the latest one is rounding with the doctors. If I stopped to round with doctors when I see them at night or in the morning, a) giving/getting report would take 2 hours, and b) I WOULD NOT be able to finish my tasks. And the crux of it all is that we get reprimanded for clocking out late and for not clocking out for lunch! There have been SO MANY times that I have not had time to take a lunch break because of all I have to do...but do they care? No...they just want you to clock out so that they dont look bad, and so that they don't have to pay us one cent more than tney have to. The law for giving a lunch break exists for a reason...the employees should not be so overworked. But many times I dont have time for a break yet I still have to clock out or I get in trouble. And if we really did and said everything that they expect, we would be in each room at night for 30-45 minutes at a time. The patients already complain about having their meds handed out too late. But guess what...with so many patients, there is no way they will all get their meds at a reasonable time. Another thing, nurses and techs that are awful, do an awful job, terrible charting, dont finish tasks, are there getting paid the same as those of us that bend over backwards trying to finish all that is expected of us. Yet it seems like they are not held accountable because nothing ever changes, they dont improve, yet they continue to be employed there.

Pros

I love this hospital. I love most of the people in it. It's like one big family. It's a newer facility, visually stunning. Very well maintained and updated.

Cons

HCAHPS has become a HUGE thorn in the side of the nursing staff. Patient care now takes a back seat to charting, documenting and patient satisfaction scores. The scores are all that matters. HCAHPS is the Holy Grail. Florence Nightingale would get called on the carpet. We now have "scripts" that we have to memorize and "act out" for shift change, rounding, and admission/discharge. Leadership Rounding makes sure we are good little robots. There are more meetings to attend than you can count. Expect a lot of your off days to be spent at the hospital hearing why the HCAHPS are so dismal. The hospital is unfortunately turning into a punitive environment as well. Money drives all, so staffing is being cut back even as profits soar. But remember, at the end of the day, it's all about "Promoting the Healing Ministry of Christ". Excuse me, but when did Jesus ever drop a bill on someone he healed? Hypocrites. Not a lot of upward mobility. The hospital does not like to promote/train from within.

Pros

The staff in ICU are a group of very caring individuals that are a joy to work with. The manager is also open and receptive to needs of the employees.

Cons

Problems are that they may be a little under staffed. This places some added stress on the floor nurses providing the one to one care that some patients need.
