Don't fall into the discount trap

Pros

Discounts on expensive stuff (not in store, but direct from brands). Great friendship among lower-level staff. I love the actual work. Just not all the baggage.

Cons

Management. Managers. Managerial style. Managerial practices. Expectations of perfect performance at low wages Employees seen as disposable No real training is provided for your position when you start. Just an orientation about rules. Unequal enforcement of rules based on management's favorites. You WILL be fired for a simple cashiering mistake of just a few dollars. You WILL be fired if you are a few minutes late for your early morning shift. You WILL be fired if a customer writes a bad review with your name in it for any reason. Including things over which you have no control. You WILL NOT be fired for any reason if you grew up in a manager's ward. You WILL NOT be fired for any reason if you have reached favorite status by commiting to years of time at a dead-end job. The VIP discount for employees is not worth the horrendous job. Just go in on one of the sale days (which we have all the time) and get the same price.

Not awful, not good

Pros

Flexible with my schedule when school started although I did feel pressure to work more.

Cons

Overall culture was not great. My managers were not very professional so I found talking to them difficult. Although I worked hard I never knew exactly where I stood with them, as they didn't often give me feedback. I was expected to do tasks that I was never adequately trained to do. During the holiday season I was expected to work twice my usual hours regardless of the fact I was in school, dealing with end of term finals.
