“Unfavorable” Review – Don’t Drink The Kool-Aid

Pros

The Bright Side: • A stable paycheck is a given, albeit whatever quarterly bonus payouts were frequently delayed.

Cons

The Caveats: • Look beyond the brief, single sentence, glowing Glassdoor reviews. Read what others have taken the time to share. This review will probably be buried quickly under a flurry of one-line high rating reviews. • The recruitment/interview process is long and quite misleading. You are made to feel extraordinarily special for being selected to interview, and how Alarm.com values its “culture” above all. They make you believe they're looking for a long-term commitment, much like a marriage. This impression is relentlessly reinforced during meetings and one day you may be RIF/laid off. • Alarm.com has a tendency to exploit fresh Ivy League graduates. They are targeted and used until they realize their worth, subsequently moving on to places where they are better valued and compensated. • Regarding compensation, do your homework. Chances are you're considerably underpaid, unless you're a Dartmouth alum with connections to the executive team. • There exist several "sacred cows" at ADC, people who contribute minimally, boast about it, and retain their inflated positions/salaries, regardless of customer complaints or departures. When customers depart the platform, these individuals simply move on to exploit someone else's hard work and repeat the cycle. Usually, it's the dedicated employees who end up picking up the slack, until they too decide to leave or get laid off. • The company and its executives tend to be quite rigid in their perspectives. Not willing to adapt or listen to key customers needs. Status quo is key. • Employee development and growth opportunities are largely non-existent outside of the marketing team. During my tenure, it seemed promotions were mainly given in the marketing department. • Unrealistic long non-compete required. • You will be disparaged by those sacred cows when you decide to leave or get laid off.

Great Company, but only for a couple years

Pros

Great culture, you will really enjoy coming into work and interacting with your coworkers. The office is really nice, and the company will put on a decent number of events for employees with free food and fun activities. People in all departments are generally friendly and really smart. I’ve never been scolded or yelled at, and the only time I’ve heard of this happening to others, the manager was fired for it. Work life balance is also very good, no late nights or weekends. Employees are given a lot of autonomy to get their work done, never felt like I was being micro-managed.

Cons

After the fancy office and occasional free meals wear off, you will realize that those things don’t help either your family or your career and you will probably feel the need to search for something else. This is the main problem with Alarm.com: They funnel millions of dollars into renovating the office and recruiting new employees, but when it comes to compensation, they will do the absolute bare minimum to keep people. There is no clear path to promotion and the culture around pay and raises is extremely secretive and shady. I heard from a coworker that she was told by her manager to stop asking about a raise after two conversations; soon after she left the company. It’s clear that management attempts to use the office and self-proclaimed “culture” as a substitute for a market rate salary, and they are also stingy about title changes. Outside of a few departments, I rarely heard about coworkers being promoted, and no one seemed at all concerned about the high attrition at the company. The sad thing is that I wanted to stay at Alarm, but hearing from my friends at other companies about their lucrative raises and promotions even though I was constantly getting positive feedback from my managers sent me looking elsewhere, and I was able to get a huge raise.

Falls short of expectations

Pros

Chill hours (not necessarily representative of work/life balance, but you can come and go from the office as you please as long as you scan your badge in for the day). I still work when I get home.

Cons

Poor growth opportunities and poor flexibility. People with real circumstances for wanting to go fully remote take 6+ months to get approval if they’re lucky, but more typically are denied, because of micromanagement at the highest level. This is so frustrating and hinders me from seeing myself at this company for much longer. Poor training- the onboarding consists of 3 days of non role specific general information that I could’ve gone without. In terms of my role, I wasn’t trained on archaic release cycle, technologies used, who to ask for what, etc., and the learning curve coupled with less than friendly teammates is overwhelming. Low compensation and hush hush compensation and promotion cycles. Everything seems like a big mystery that no one wants to talk about. SILOES. It takes at least an entire week to get any small thing done by the time you’ve roped in every person who has to say their piece from different teams. Overall cheapness. A lot of get togethers are BYOL (bring your own lunch) which is fine for the most part but many other tech companies who require in-office attendance provide lunch at least every so often.
