Pros

Nice people to work directly with, sometimes free food

Cons

Too many challenges to name them all, but here goes. Constant blame game by management Management flat out tells you to ignore customer requests (especially with schedules), because "they're not the ones writing your paycheck". Constant fear of termination No recognition (unless you count that one time we got ice cream) No semblance of organization Verbal abuse from some senior "leadership". I got a call from another "leader" on my work phone one time where she wanted to gossip about another leader who had sent me a nasty email. Leaders have it out for each other and will pit the lowly folk in the middle. If you speak to HR, they blame YOU and pass the buck when interviewing by saying "it's disgruntled employees, we're not like that" (I was salaried, so dont let HR blame the hourly people) Antiquated systems Use post-it notes for scheduling rather than an actual system Wasteful of material Poor benefits package No regard for work/life balance

Pros

Learn many different methods and techniques very quickly, often out of necessity because the turnaround rates in the lab are abysmal and there is nobody to do the work, very few people stay longer than 1-2 years. Good benefit package Good lab analyst and reviewers make it nice to work with

Cons

Poor business model, its all about quantity not quality, scientific excellence is not priority, its all about getting the most work done in the shortest amount of time, and then they want to act like they actual care about quality. The whole quality thing is just so we do just enough to not get shut down by the FDA. The first, second, and third priorities are to make the most money for the executives and business teams. Efforts to Improve methods and attempts to streamline/increase efficiencies are futile. There is never any time to improve or innovate due to the high work load. Even if you had time to innovate and try to improve efficiencies, your efforts would most likely not even be noticed, or purposely overlooked. Executive team is delusional, they do not understand the implications that major changes have on the everyday lives of the analyst. It is like revolving door, intelligent flexible people get out soon while other people who have family ties or commitments to the area are the people who stay more long term...and lately even those experienced analyst and reviewers are leaving. Analyst are underpaid, even for the area which is a relatively low living expenses. Job titles and experience seem irrelevant. I was performing the exact same testing and had more responsibilities compared to people making almost twice my salary. They don't care who does the work, as long as it gets done, as a result of this people are rarely recognized for their hard work and contributions. Major Disconnect between business/Human Resources side and actual work that is being done by the analyst. Human Resources are a joke, they do not even know what analyst do in the lab, they are just doing the bidding of the executive team. In my experience almost all accounts of employees going to HR backfired on the employees Poor management, unqualified to lead and/or supervise people. This is due to the fact that nobody wants these positions due to the complete sacrifice of social life. So the very few people that do apply get the job regardless of qualification, there is NO COMPETITION they are just happy that someone has agreed to the postion. I promise they need you more than you need them. Just don't waste your time. There are so many better companies out there.

Pros

I previously worked in the Biotechnology group. The best part about Alcami in my three years was the people I worked side by side with. Otherwise, working with some flexibility in your hours was nice.

Cons

-Management is very poor as there is no mentorship, leadership or any desire to help you grow and learn. Yes, we understand that growth is also about filling company needs, but the opportunities are never there when people are always assigned the same work without any variety. And when there are challenges, management expects you to figure it out, shrugging their shoulders until the turn-around time for the project isn't hit, and then they play the blame game for you not getting it done. Management, for me, was not readily approachable, personable or resourceful. Unappreciative at all levels above the worker bee. -Company Culture, in which there was a lot of gossip and drama between people, making work seem like high school. I was never in the drama, but it is definitely noticeable and you certainly hear about people's work/personal business. The rumor mill is high, here.
