Pros

The people you work with at Alliant are incredibly thoughtful, professional, and dedicated. They are the glue that holds the entire thing together. Salary and benefits seemed competitive, but once you're in it can be far too political when it comes to promotions and salary increases. Schedule flexibility was good, but that was because individual low-level leaders were allowed to manage it. Severance packages can be pretty good.

Cons

Executive leadership has been on the decline for years, and continues to be the root of problems at the company. Employee engagement and well-being is lip service - you'll be sacrificed on the altar of O&M budgets in a heartbeat if it comes down to it. Far too many reorganizations - some departments every other year. I was there over a decade and went through quite a few. Alliant IT is more interested in throwing money at consultants that will tell them a strategy and process improvements than actually staffing appropriately so their own people can show their value. Resources are incredibly thin and taken for granted. Any cohesive technology strategy would be great. My experience is upper management says the most inane and obvious things and pats themselves on the backs for being so creative and inventive, and then those same upper management people don't live the values of the company or contribute in any meaningful way to their own strategy. Employee recognition is an afterthought at best - most times it's nearly nothing. Your performance is in no way actually rewarded because there are such tight restrictions - 90% of employees get the same merit increase each year. As long as you're not the worst of the worst, there is no distinction in recognition. Lower leadership does the best they can but are severely limited by mediocre, controlling middle and upper leaders. There is zero ongoing leadership training or mentoring, and almost zero support for personal development except to say there are individual development plans, but you're on your own to find any personal time and money to invest. Tuition reimbursement is good but if you're looking for a certification or something less than a 2 or 4 year degree, they won't support you. HR is all over the place - constantly understaffed and mostly caught up in trying to NOT have true policies they have to defend or uphold. It's honestly amazing how downhill the company has gone the last 5-7 years. It's solely about budgets.

Big and Dumb

Pros

In a regulated monopoly with thousands of employees and a wide variety of systems there has to be a few positions, at least for a while, that are rewarding.

Cons

Consider yourself lucky if you end up in a position that is rewarding and has any kind of stability. Enjoy it while it lasts. Can’t imagine lasting long enough at this company anymore for the pay and benefits to create any long term stability for you or your family. I lasted 20+ years before the endless downsizing claimed me. I’ll eat my hat if anyone ever works for the company that long again. Terrible morale is inevitable in a place that is constantly reorganizing. As long as the lights stay on and they stay out of the headlines the management will continue to congratulate themselves with huge bonuses. I may be wrong but I’m assuming if they still had to efficiently run a fleet of power plants it’d be a reliability disaster. But mainly tending to solar panels, wind farms and keeping a few natural gas pipelines running doesn’t require anywhere near that level of expertise. My father was an executive for the company way back when. Could not believe what the company devolved into. That devolution began a long time ago and from the dozens of people I know who used to work there it’s only getting worse. But what does the management of a regulated utility guaranteed a profit care?

Pros

Flexibility to work from home.

Cons

Alliant has taken a bad turn as a respected employer. HR is covering up honest reviews to offset the honest truths. It’s a very demanding job and stress is high! Many people from all areas are voluntarily leaving the company. Since offering severance to nearly 100 employees in the last 5 months, tension is running wild! There isn’t enough coverage to complete tasks! The threat of sending jobs to India has been mentioned by our new Director one to many times. Impact analysis by our CIO was mentioned a few times after they reduced staff; not before, but after. People are not happy in their jobs anymore at AE. Anxiety is running high!
