Flight Attendant Review

Pros

The benefits provided are very good. Travel has and will improve once again on June 1st to free travel in first, business and coach classes system wide and world wise(just have to pay the taxes). even though medical has gone up, AA has a very good medical for flight attendants. You will work with great people and will meet great customers.

Cons

First year as a flight attendant can be very hard. you'll be on reserve, when bidding for your schedules, most likely you'll hold crappy trips as trips are awarded by seniority, low salary, adjusting to a new way of life...IE: sleeping patterns, having to share an apartment with other fellow crew members in order to make it with your initial salary, but don't give up because it gets better and better as the years go by.

Pros

Amazing flight benefits - it was a great way to explore the world!

Cons

I worked for AA in the administration department in PHX & transferred to ORD 2 years ago. This transition was like night & day. When I first started with the company, I had every intention of retiring with them - that is how much I believed in the company’s mission “going for greAAt”. Everyone in PHX that I worked with displayed this mentality & it reflected in a collaborative team work environment. Although the work expected didn’t align with the pay they offer, that aspect didn’t bother me so much since I always felt they offered AMAZING benefits. Unfortunately, the company morale from PHX isn’t consistent with how ORD is run. Fast forward to life at ORD - the only reason why I choose to leave the company. During my short 2 year career in Chicago, I’ve grown to realize how the Administration Management staff didn’t utilize their resources available, nor did they offer any career development/goals. There was no team collaboration, and most importantly no type of support in my current roll within the Admin department. Monthly meetings were cancelled for more than a year, innovational ideas weren’t entertained, nor was there any flexibility with our schedules. Although I was given a position I didn’t even apply for, I thrived in it. Management saw this & continued to delegate more & more tasks making my current workload biased & unreasonable. When I started to feel the “burn out” I asked for assistance. To my surprise, management wouldn’t provide any. I was laughed at & told that “I had everything under control & it didn’t seem like I needed any help”. So I continued to thrive & make the most of everyday. After-all, where could I find another job with such great benefits? Less than a month ago, we had a death in the family. I made the choice to separate from the company when I was told by management that my absences would be counted as unauthorized since I needed more than 3 days to grieve. This wasn’t the culture that I knew to be true at American & choose to no longer subject myself to these type of working conditions. I get this is how most major corporations function, but their motto “going for greAAt” should be instilled within their Management & displayed consistently regardless of which department/HUB they’re from.

Pros

The ability to work from home, and have an airline job is absolutely phenomenal. Unless there are IROPs or cases where it gets busy and you have to work mandatory overtime, you will have a lot of flexibility after probation is over. You will get to drop and swap shifts, and work your schedule to accommodate your life along with VTO and PTO. Some people like to work more than others. However, don’t forget that shift bids are by seniority, so you may not get a desirable shift starting out. Those of us that have worked in the airline industry for a long time know how unpredictable it can be at times. Training is also very good. Also, the best part, of course is the benefits. Travel for you, spouse or travel companion, dependent kids, and buddy passes for friends. Having a reservations job is also a very knowledgeable and good experience to build skills in case you decide to go elsewhere in the future. There are also opportunities to move up in the company, and advance to another position if you decide that reservations isn’t for you, as long as you apply yourself.

Cons

The pay is terrible, especially working out of Miami, where cost of living is high. You also have to provide your own equipment starting out. Imagine needing to have the best and most expensive internet plan to work this job, and your paycheck gets eaten up due to the costs of having to pay for the internet and electric bill in your home. This job would be good for people that already run a business from home, and wanted good side money basically, unless that was American’s goal. Also, training is extremely long. Since it’s work from home, I believe it’s fair to do the first 2 weeks on site to get used to things, and then send everyone home for the remainder of training, since most are driving long distances to get to work, and the traffic in Miami is horrendous at all hours of the day.
