Growing Company

Pros

The company is growing at a rapid pace. With this comes a ton of opportunity for growth and exposure to many aspects of the company. Each person plays a vital role in the success of the company. Accountability is a huge part of of the culture. Some failure is expected and welcomed, as they provide learning experiences. But taking accountability for any failure is huge. The corporate team is small and familial. Many people have become friends beyond work. Since the company is relatively young, there is a lot of opportunity for experimental solutions. This allows everyone to have a voice and bring ideas to upper management for efficiency and accuracy. They are always open to hearing solutions. The office makes an effort to enjoy one another with happy hours and holiday celebrations, such as potlucks and costume contests. Supporting the field is corporate's main objective. There is definitely a sense of working towards a greater cause because of this.

Cons

Since the company is growing so quickly, there is often a lack of resources to keep up with the growth. One-man departments are common, with no one to back them up if they are sick or want to take vacation. Taking vacation is pretty rare throughout corporate, not because it isn't encouraged, it just isn't really possible with the workload. While accountability is a huge, there are times when a lack of trust and communication among the office prevails. Finger pointing happens more times than not. Management is pushing to implement processes and programs that will better streamline the company across all 500+ locations. But with so few resources and people to properly implement the programs, there is a ton of stress and things fall through the cracks. A massive amount of pressure is on each person. Work/life balance has been diminishing over the last year. Benefits and salary are below average. The people make up for it, but it can be frustrating as the cost of living is increasing like crazy in the Bay Area.

I really appreciate the time that you took to provide a very comprehensive review. You are so right that with rapid growth, come the challenges of resources. Relatively speaking, the corporate office is still quite small which leads to what you described: "one-man" departments with no back up. Our senior leadership team is dedicated to continuing to work on strategies that will help us to grow as a company, drive superior levels of customer service but that also provide our employees with a great work life balance. And we absolutely are dedicated to streamlining processes so that our employees can take the vacation time that they need and deserve. Thank you for the advice on communications. Sometimes, when it's a small office, it is easy to assume that somehow communications just happen organically, but that isn't always the case. With respect to celebrating success, it is something we try to do on a regular basis, though, to your point, this has been a really challenging year! We also plan, in the new year, to introduce a start of the art on-line recognition/communications system that should facilitate the ability to reach out to employees with updates, to solicit feedback and to also recognize the great efforts and talents of all our employees.

This is a great company to work for! Everyone is very approachable and even the executives roll up their sleeves and dig into the work. Managers empower their employees and care about their success.

Cons

We are growing and changing - but it's exciting! It's a great time to work here - nothing but good things ahead.

Thank you for your comments and your advice. I would agree that this is a very approachable culture where you can feel comfortable speaking with everybody. We are definitely growing and quickly. This can result in the need for rapid change and flexibility. Sometimes this can feel confusing. But it's all part of laying down the foundation for future growth. With respect to engagement and development, we have recently implemented a Learning Management System which will help us to better coordinate, administer and track the training of our employees. In the new year, we hope to roll out an online communications and rewards/recognition program to help in being able to reach out to our many field employees and to better recognize the great work they do.
