Lied to During Acquisition

Pros

Our company was bought by Aptean. Aptean management was very considerate of our company culture and policies. They waved Aptean dress code restrictions (our previous company's dress code was more lax) and were willing to negotiate with the terms of the employment agreement. I was never asked to work insane hours. Laid off employees were allowed to continue to work (and receive a paycheck) for a number of months. Benefits are good.

Cons

Our company was bought by Aptean. We were promised Aptean would be pumping money into the company and were looking to grow it. A year later, we have had multiple layoffs, almost our entire R&D division is gone as well as large portions of QA. In addition, they are lowering support for customers. Since customer support is going downhill and there is no new development, customers will likely start leaving, leading to even more layoffs.

Each of our products and acquisitions is unique in terms of how we can help the business be set-up for long-term success. For some of our businesses, we need to focus, making changes to be more efficient in how we deliver mission critical products to our customers. We do not make changes without spending a lot of time in the business, talking to customers, and reviewing what we do and do not do well, as an organization. At times, this focus may have a direct impact on our people, a decision we do not take lightly. When there is an impact on our people, we try to address the situation with integrity and provide support for our people during the transition. While we do not underestimate the impact on the individual, we are confident these changes will help ensure the longer term success and stability of the product and the team. I appreciate you voicing your thoughts so that we can continue to be mindful of how we handle these difficult decisions.

Pros

Good coffee, laid back dress code. I personally have a very good work-life balance, but I think that is dependent on the role/department.

Cons

The company is very disorganized and everything is constantly changing--and not in a good way. I have had 4 different bosses in the past year, seen loads of my coworkers get laid off, and seen even more people have their job description completely change to suit whatever Aptean needs at the moment. My job has changed so much that it has nothing to do with what I'm interested in, and it keeps going further in that direction. Management doesn't really seem to think of employees as people with personalities and goals and skillsets, but more as bodies to fill chairs, that can be shuffled around however they see fit.

Rapid and Disorganized Growth

Pros

I worked for a company that was acquired by Aptean. -Good work-life balance -Competitive salary -Didn't fire all (just some) of my coworkers

Cons

-Told us first day of acquisition that employee retention would be very high and then laid off about 1/3 of our company over the first year -Constantly shifting organizational structure - they rearrange departments and responsibilities incredibly frequently - both within our company and at the upper management corporate level -Rapid growth almost solely through acquisition leads to a lot of internal inefficiencies. It's hard for everything to run smoothly as a cohesive business when you acquire 5 companies per year -We had to switch to all their systems and process flows which were much less effective than ours. Namely we had to use their core CRM system Pivotal which they all admitted was terrible and then said there was nothing that could be done about it -Cut virtually all R&D which asks the question of what is the future of the company and product -Management either is very out of touch with employees or simply doesn't care -Health care plan was terrible and there was only 1 option

I appreciate you sharing your perspective about the experience that you and some of your co-workers have gone through. Your feedback is taken to heart and we do care. We are certainly not perfect, but our intent is truly to align our teams to be able to deliver great products/solutions, services and support to our customers. We may have less resources working on some activities, but our approach for doing so is to become more effective at how we deliver and how quickly we can meet the needs of our customers. To set ourselves up to achieve this, we also need to have our entire company using the same systems and processes, which requires moving our acquired businesses to the Aptean platform. However, we are very focused on improving our processes and our systems, as how we have designed them does not always support our evolving business model and our acquired businesses have a lot of input into this. I really appreciate you voicing your thoughts so that we can continue to be mindful of how we handle future transitions and the resulting difficult decisions we may have to make.
