Faulty Science and even worse leadership

Pros

The leadership team is blissfully unaware of their faults which allows me to justify their incompleteness as well intentioned.

Cons

The research team is basing their science off false assumptions. The research leadership consist of the biggest egotistical narcissist's I've ever encountered which impedes their ability to think clearly regarding science and business strategy. The leadership has never taken a company from inception to commercialization and it shows with every miss step in trial direction and careless communication they take. Juan and Terry act like this is another side project railroading and disempowering the brilliance underneath them with every action and communication. There's a huge misalignment in their actions compared to their communications and the organization is able to see right through their complete lack of self awareness. Those underneath them are completely disempowered and despite trying to communicate the challenges to HR and those who should be able to influence change, the continued messaging is there's nothing that can be done and this is just the way it it. It's incredibly sad as there are some incredible individuals working here, but the organization is definitely being run into the ground from a science and culture perspective.

Pros

-Ability to cross train into other areas. -Opportunities to be independent. -Company has stability/money -Generally good benefits -will pay bridge toll whether or not you take the bridge to get to work -ability to be involved with authoring papers

Cons

-pay is not competitive with the market -no work-life balance -long hours of work(over 40+hrs/week regularly) -Pay and promotions are based of years of service or retention, not merit. -They don't reward quality of work and work ethic and reward those who do less or make more mistakes. -Inexperienced managers -Sheltering incompetence and those whom are a liability. -HR does nothing to help the employee. -Will not address issues - sweeps under the rug to further escalate and push good employees to leave, while retraining problem/abusive employees.

Pros

Deal with Gilead puts Arcus at an amazing position . Highly competent and talented people for positions scientist and up, so if you’re a scientist, this is an amazing place with a great community of people with a lot of growth opportunities. To reiterate a previous review, there are no disciplinary actions for poor performance; they want everyone to be happy.

Cons

Only bad things are incompetent managers. Environment for RAs are probably the worst, so if you’re an RA and you get into a bad team/have a bad manager.. Tough luck - it’s like you’re getting hazed and if you speak up, you’ll be punished for it guaranteed. The hiring managers will LIE and act sweet and helpful as much as possible when you’re interviewing but completely disappear once you get the job because all they needed to do was find someone to save their job - completely two faced. No one will care about what you have to say because it’s your managers word over yours. If you have a teammate who does absolutely nothing (while being paid as much or even more than you are), you will have to foot the weight of the rest of the workload without complaining because managers do nothing here but yell at you then go run personal errands for themselves and lazy people will never leave since no one gets fired here for minor things. Even when doing someone else’s workload including your own, you will still be told you didn’t do enough. If a colleague harasses you, and you try to ignore them, your manager will pull you aside and tell you to stop ignoring your harasser, because it’s “unprofessional” and threaten to write it on your evaluation causing you lose your bonus and any possible promotion.. It’s ironic because once you go on vacation, your manager doesn’t even know what to do and are completely incapable of doing even a fraction of the work they assign you! They either don’t do it and wait for you to come back and give you even more work to punish you for going on vacation or they’ll assign it to someone else. So I highly encourage all RAs to go on long vacations all at once! If you are an RA, avoid this place like it’s the plague, they do not care about you even a little bit. Don’t worry, if you are a scientist, you will be taken care of very well!
