Glad to see your time here has been so positive, and we appreciate your hearing all the things that you love about working here. We couldn’t agree more. Regarding why we don’t have a bonus, this was very intentional, as our founders strongly believe bonuses are not aligned to our guiding principles of "Win Together" and "Ownership Mindset". However, to ensure we pay fairly, when we do our annual compensation market studies, we benchmark against total annual cash compensation, where we include not only the base salary data but also bonus data. Regarding our lack of a bonus program, this was intentional, as our founders believe that rewarding based on merit through annual performance-based salary increases is more aligned with our “Win Together” guiding principle. However, we are committed to offering competitive pay. Our salary benchmarking methodology takes into account the total cash compensation (base salary, potential bonuses and other short-term cash incentives). In addition, we offer at least 3 weeks paid vacation, paid sick time, and stock options to our North American employees. - Sonia Senior Manager, People & Culture

Thank you for taking the time to share all the things you valued about your time working at Article. During the pandemic, we experienced a period of hypergrowth where we grew 300% in a very short time. However, like many companies, in 2022 we needed to re-strategize given the impact of the current business climate, and focus on building a stable, sustainable foundation. I can understand how this felt at times; changes aren’t easy, and there has been a lot of hard work put in. Our Win Together and Ownership Mindset principles aren’t just words on a wall. We appreciate that our teams provide us with this open feedback so we can continue to improve, but we really do trust our employees to do their best work in solving some really interesting problems as we evolve. - Carlyn, Talent Acquisition Business Partner

Pros

The people at Article are still trying!

Cons

I am deeply disappointed by the experience I have with Article. The company's executive leadership is shockingly incompetent, and it is clear that they have no idea how to lead a company of this size effectively. The Marketing Leadership, for instance, has risen through the ranks quickly but is clearly not cut out for leadership in an e-commerce business. They default to micromanaging, which has caused a great deal of turnover within the department. Despite making major mistakes, they seem to be immune from any consequences, which suggests that they're part of a tight boy's club that values loyalty over competence. Thinking they're the smartest person in the room, despite having no idea how to create and execute a proper strategy is infuriating. The CEO is no better, with a clear unconscious bias that has led to drive-by management and a shocking lack of knowledge about his own business. While he likes to discuss issues on a philosophical level, people are losing their jobs due to the company's lack of direction. Maybe this is the reason why we don't have a BOD, there is no one to hold him accountable. The COO is stubborn and unable to collaborate effectively with his colleagues. He has failed to secure buy-in for a new operating system, which has resulted in a failed implementation. If this situation is not rectified soon, Article is in danger of collapsing, despite the many talented people within the company who are still trying to make a difference. The entire executive team appears to be unaligned, and this has been a major point of feedback from employees. However, instead of looking inward and addressing these concerns, employees are told that they will 'explain' the company's strategy one more time. This kind of dismissive response only serves to exacerbate the frustration and disillusionment felt by those who are struggling to make sense of the company's direction. In conclusion, I strongly advise anyone considering doing business with Article to look elsewhere.

I am saddened to read that you are deeply disappointed by your experience at Article. It appears we have both been at the company for more than three years and have witnessed our growth, collective successes, and challenges. I would be the first to admit we have been experiencing growing pains as we continue to mature and build our company. Without the right context or clear communications, it's hard to understand the full picture and I recognize we have work to do to share our direction more effectively. Like many companies, in 2022 we needed to re-strategize given the current business climate and we have not always done a great job at communicating this internally. Regardless of challenges, how we work will always be guided by our company values such as Winning Together which encourages open honest dialogue in the spirit of being better. We provide a number of channels for employees to provide feedback such as: engagement surveys, pulse checks, focus groups, All Hands, Ask me Anything, and 1:1 discussions that anyone can have with any leader in the company. The leadership team, which includes myself, reviews all feedback in an effort to identify themes and actionable solutions. We take feedback from our employees seriously and thoroughly discuss all themes in the pursuit of making Article a better company. Our current strategy has set us on the right path and placed us in a position to take on future challenges. That said, we do acknowledge we have work ahead of us to be the company we can all be proud of. Given you are a current employee, I would love to have a completely confidential conversation with you to help me better understand the context behind how you’re feeling and to look for potential solutions together.
