Pros

Unlimited paid time off; flexible work schedule

Cons

Middle managers have big egos and not only tolerate but condone junior high school behavior. Very little opportunity to advance, so editors/managers work on building alliances and achieving personal goals by employing political tactics. The workload is very heavy, and the salaries do not compensate for experience or tenure.

Pros

Great people, great businesses, deep domain knowledge and passion in the individual business units.

Cons

Ascend level leadership is fairly weak, and not very transparent, clearly the C-level is out for themselves first, the businesses second. The technology organization is the Achilles heel of Ascend.

Pros

Team atmosphere is strong, occasional great perks (Red Sox tickets), and opportunities for advancement are available in some departments - although not in a traditional publishing progression.

Cons

Attrition is frequent and employee retention is not a priority for the company, even for employees who have worked at the company for many years, resulting in frequent loss of product and company knowledge. Digital products are created haphazardly, and management did not plan the transition and strategy comprehensively beforehand. Investment in initiatives changes constantly, creating stress, insecurity and low morale for employees not working on big revenue lists.
