Pros

Work/life balance, positive atmosphere, stable employment, adequate benefits, opportunities to move around

Cons

There is a lot of short-sighted decision making, a lot of focus on individuals at the expense of teams, and a lack of trust in people to do things without a manager looking over the shoulder

Pros

401K with match - you put in 5%, they put in 4% Fully funded pension plan Excellent health plan Solid benefits package Flex Time

Cons

You are payed below the industry here You are expected to do the work of 2 people You will not be paid overtime as a salaried employee If you work overtime, that is "your choice" They are very secretive about the salary ranges of their positions Raises are also very secretive, at other carriers - you could get up to 3% - basically if you aren't a good employee, you get 0%, if you are average you get 1%, if above average you can get 2% and if excellent you get 3%, it doesn't work that way here. Raises seem to be in multiples of $500 - like 500/1000/1500 - etc. There is no clarity about how your raise is determined or why you get what you get. Auto Owners is still in the 20th century, they do not act in good faith, and I find it hilarious that they are so secretive about salary ranges and what the benchmarks are on raises when one of their core values is honesty. It's almost like if you have ever watched the movie Wanted - Morgan Freeman gets the names of people from the cloth, I wonder if they have a similar operation in home office. That is kind of how it feels.

Stable and Safe Choice For a Career

Pros

The benefits are great. Profit sharing bonuses and Christmas bonuses help make up for the lower salaries.

Cons

Salaries are lower than the industry and one person tends to get stuck doing the job of 5. The underwriters also tend to be overwhelmed and unmotivated. Branch management does not hold associates accountable and there seems to be a lot of “dead weight” within the branches. People have caught on to the fact that longevity trumps merit in this company, which is why the underperforming associates will never leave since they have a safe home here. This causes a lot of stress and frustration to the ones who truly care about their job and want to do things correctly. Eventually, the truly good workers who know their worth will get fed up and go somewhere else. Therefore, by process of elimination, the ones who stick it out long enough doing the bare minimum are the ones who get promoted to management and the cycle continues. I think they are trying to correct this (maybe a little), but it will take a very long time to undue their old school mindset due to the current management structure.
