A Formerly Magical Place to Work

Pros

Avalara will always have a wonderful place in my heart. The work can frequently be psychotic but the culture and people there are wonderful. Sadly, this culture is no more. I unfortunately cannot encourage anyone be consider Avalara due to its stellar former reputation and as a chaotic but fun place to work. Hard work will not be rewarded. You are nothing but an expense to your leadership and the company no longer strives to continue to innovate. The products are no longer the best in breed as they were for so long. It is so disappointing that I cannot in good faith give it the 5 star review that most of my time there was spent experiencing; it is Avalara in name alone now.

Cons

With its acquisition, Avalara no longer values their talented employees and see the product offering as a mature product, no longer requiring elite talent, and only focuses on reducing salary expenses. Do NOT consider Avalara if you are in Seattle as the company has intentionally been trying to reduce their Seattle presence by any means possible.

Pros

-Co-workers -Truly every other positive reason (and there were plenty to begin) is out of the window. Vista is tanking this company.

Cons

-Despite being hired as a hybrid / remote employee now required to be full time in office despite living over an hour away with a 4 days notice -Quotas being pushed higher and higher to the point they are unattainable so they don't have to pay -Promotional path is getting totally destroyed -Outsourcing everything possible overseas to save money -Mass Layoffs -Culture has imploded everyone is miserable -Leads are horrific -Leadership does not have employees backs

A quiet fire company

Pros

I have amazing co workers!

Cons

If you want to work in the midst of nepotism, favoritism, racism and a slow firing environment this is the place for you. Avalara is falsely giving low contributor ratings and PIP’s without feedback or monthly one on one’s. Instead of having a mass layoff they are firing employees without warning. This should be illegal. When I started 4 yrs ago it was the best place to work, an amazing culture. Now it has become like working in he**. Please find somewhere else to work, this is no longer a place to strive to be.
