The culture has declined over the past few years. Teams are constantly expected to deliver the maximum while the minimum is done for them in terms of resourcing and recognition. Morale is low and burnout is widespread. Leadership often fail to read the room with their communications - for example, celebrating awards, new marketing slogans, and learning initiatives doesn’t sit well when people are exhausted and feeling undervalued. At the same time, significant money is spent on fancy offices (that are largely empty) and new systems that don’t work - these things won’t improve profitability, while bonuses and other forms of recognition for hard work (the things actually valued by clients) are almost non-existent. Salaries have fallen significantly behind market rates, many promotions are overdue, and little is done to retain people until they’ve already handed in their notice. The exit interview now taking place via online survey, rather than a real conversation, feels symbolic of how disconnected leadership has become from listening to people… and perhaps also the volume of people leaving.
