Decide What You Want Battelle to Be

Pros

As noted elsewhere, Battelle is its employees. Talented, in many cases selfless, and always ready to help, I was humbled to work with such great people. And Battelle does many, many interesting things. Professionally I enjoyed my time there.

Cons

There is no career path. The overwhelming feeling in the present culture is if you stay around long enough you will eventually be let go. Pay was never all that competitive with other contracting companies, but the benefits were really good. That is changing rapidly. Hmm let see: no career path, so-so pay, benefits worse by the month, and the constant threat of layoffs. No wonder Battelle is losing talent left and right.

Slashing Benefits

Pros

The team I work with does great work, and we have a great camaraderie. I have repeatedly hear that people stay at Battelle because of the people and not because of the company.

Cons

Upper management is looking to make the organization more competitive this past year; however, it is doing so by slashing benefits. They are currently evaluating whether to cut two PTO days that people have earned during their time of service. At Battelle, PTO includes sick and personal time. The organization already does NOT close on all federal holidays, such as Veterans Day. In an effort to convince employees that losing two days is actually a good thing, Battelle is looking to implement a 9/80 schedule, with spin touting the 3-day weekend as additional days off. In reality, employees have still put in their necessary 80 hours. Also, not everyone in the organization can take advantage of this new schedule, meaning they will simply lose two days of PTO. Additionally, dental is becoming voluntary and 100 employee covered.

Pros

Good place to start, interesting work with a lot of potential to learn new things. Management tends to be hands off for the most part, schedule is pretty flexible.

Cons

Battelle has so many problems. The compensation is mediocre and in some cases unfairly low. Benefits are atrocious. If you are a researcher, scientist technician, etc, upper management has no idea what you do and they don't understand it at all. Leads to a lot of problems when it comes to staffing and budgets. The real problem though is the amount of favoritism and politics that goes on. I have watched so many deserving people get passed over for someone who got in with the right people despite having inferior knowledge and expertise. You will not get promoted unless you know someone. They will decide pretty quickly if you're in the in crowd or not and if you, like most, aren't then just get your experience and leave because it's not worth working for a company that doesn't respect you as an employee.
