Pros

It's a paycheck while you have it...

Cons

Upper managements claims they would reduce management and overhead by eliminating 400 jobs. In my business line, approximately 10% of the engineers were let go while a new management position was opened (approximately a 10% increase in an already bloated, inneffective management team). Management called it a Reduction In Force (RIF), but there are currently 36 positions open in my old business line. Lies! People who didn't blindly follow the company's misguided direction were let go while they remain unable to fill open positions. Unless you like playing games, brown nosing, and/or being a lemming, work anywhere else.

Pros

If your education and experience leads you to the Technical side of the Company, you will work with some of the most gifted and/or highly trained professionals in town, on some very interesting Contracts / Projects that will hopefully benefit the world through science. If you find yourself in the Business side of the Company, you will have joined a slowly sinking ship.

Cons

The sad saga of Battelle over the last ten years is a heartbreaker. It has become rife with unethical business dealings, corrupt HR practices, and rampant deceit and indecision. Discrimination and prejudice abound in all areas of the company, and begin from the Top down ... with Executive Management being comprised of an all-male, ultra-conservative, all-white, Right-Wing Christianist makeup. Retribution for dissenting views and opinions is swift and harsh. The Diversity Team of about 30 staff was completely dismantled a few years ago. Beehive mentality and group-thought and conformist behavior is now the Rule of the day. At the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016, a "Staffing Optimization Plan" led over 500 seasoned professionals over the age of 50 to the front door. A huge loss to both sides of the House. The company is reeling on the business side of operations. The various computer systems supporting operations are the biggest obstacle, and still do not work despite tens of millions of dollars used to implement and repair them over the last 10 years.

Not what it used to be

Pros

ability to work from home during family emergencies, management is pretty hands off and not a lot of micro-managing, gym and cafeteria onsite, emergency daycare benefits,

Cons

shinking ship--upper management has implemented a lot of cost savings measures that have severely impacted employee morale. Lots of layoff and "voluntary" separations. Very cut throat culture. People rise to the top by throwing others under the bus, not a team culture. Performance reviews are a set up for failure; contract research is cyclical--you may be busy one month, and not so busy another month, in spite of this there is poor labor forecasting and some staff stay consistently overloaded with work, others without. If you're low on work, you must make strategic alliances with your team to secure new work--just a really tiring process.
