Pros

The only pro of working for Belk Corporate was the 20% off employee discount at Belk stores.

Cons

I was in a management position on Belk's Ecommerce team; however, I was rarely empowered to make decisions or lead my team in any meaningful way. I had the president of the company along with an executive vice president, senior vice presidents and directors giving specific creative direction that they expected me to simply echo to my team to execute on the website, even when this direction was not consistent with industry best practices. There is an institutional lack of knowledge and understanding of the roles, responsibilities and processes needed to successfully operate a user experience team. They would often hire people who have the skills and knowledge to improve things; however, leadership then feels threatened by their knowledge, so they supress people's abilities to positively impact the team. Inevitably, the good people become frustrated and move on to go work somewhere else. People who don't move on to other companies are generally unhappy in their jobs and/or working under extreme stress and pressure. Goals and expectations are poorly communicated, and there is no vision for the Ecommerce team, at least there hasn't been one communicated to the team. I wouldn't recommend to anyone that they go work for Belk on the corporate side. I shared these concerns with HR, and they merely acknowledged their awareness of these issues while confessing they don't believe they'll improve any time soon b/c the executives aren't going anywhere. The icing on the cake is that Belk pays their employees about $0.50 - $0.70 on the dollar.

Pros

There are very little incentives if you work for Belk part-time since you don't get any benefits or paid time off. You will get the extra 20 percent discount for shopping in the store, which is okay but not great, since they pass out 20 percent coupons like candy at the front door to all customers. The biggest perk is being left alone to work. Usually you will not even see a manager unless you aren't getting enough credits. So for the most part, you are on your own about how you want to arrange things in your department and rotate sales with your co-workers.

Cons

Don't be fooled by their suggestion box in the break room, your ideas as a sales associate are not important to the company. What is important is that you reach your credit goals and maintain the customer service score. Hopefully if you take this job, you are good at manipulating people to do things they don't need or truly want to do, and have no qualms about how it might affect their life in the long run. A lot of people now are smarter about store credit and won't take you up on your pleas to open them an account, but you'll get the occasional buyer that absolutely can't live without that 300 dollar Keurig Coffee Brewer and will patiently wait while you sign them up for high interest rates and inevitable debt. If you are on the operations team, just know that means you'll be expected to do everything that sale associates do, only without the duty of getting credit. You will also be under appreciated. Sales associates know that you can cash out customers, so if you are putting away clothes in their department, don't be surprised if you find them on a long cigarette break, while you do their job and yours. And don't forget the fitting rooms, since there is no limit to how many items customers can take in there at a time and some women think that's their opportunity to play dress up with designer clothes and leave them mangled and full of make-up in a dirty heap on the floor. You'll spend more time cleaning up just so you can do your job, which is supposed to be markdowns, or putting out freight. But you'll find this hard to complete if the department is a wreck. You'll be blamed for that as well, since there is no clear description of what operations is supposed to do, because management likes to use them for so many different things that should actually be the responsibility of the sales team or the department mangers. To sum it up, Belk wants their store to appear like a high end department store, even though the people that maintain the store are not appreciated and work harder than they are paid to. Yes, every once in awhile the store manager might spring for lunch or pass around a bag of sausage biscuits for all your hard work, but wouldn't you just rather get a raise, or genuine recognition for what you do? Wouldn't you rather just see your department manager out on the floor getting credit with you, and making thoughtful decisions about how their areas should look? Should it all be left on your shoulders?
