Pros

4 weeks of PTO for salaried Execs plus a comp week early in the year. Occasional double discount.

Cons

Belk does not care about their employees. Let me say that again. Belk. Does. Not. Care. About. Their. Employees. Belk has really shown their true colors through the handling of the pandemic. While other retailers were giving their “essential” employees raises, bonuses, and additional PTO, Belk gave their salaried executives (who have been working through the entire pandemic) a pay cut, we will not be getting any raises or bonuses this year, and they will not be making any more contributions to our health savings accounts. When stores were directed to close because of COVID-19 and everyone was directed to “shelter in place” by the governor, Belk told salaried managers that we were considered “essential” and we still had to report to work. If we were pulled over during the shelter in place order, we were instructed to lie to whomever was asking and say that we “work in packing and shipping”. Let me be clear, I do not and have never worked in packing and shipping. I work at a department store, but since we were processing online orders from the store during this time, we were told to say that we “work in packing and shipping”. We were never given anything in writing about this. This was all conveyed via conference call. To make things even more insulting, after my pay cut, I made less money than someone who was safe at home and on unemployment, so in my eyes, I was risking my health to work for free. Belk still does not offer any paid sick days. None. Even in the time of Covid. To be fair, I believe that you do get paid sick days if you have a confirmed case of Covid, but you will not get a paid sick day for any other condition. Even if you have a Dr’s note. Dr’s notes mean nothing at Belk. Worst of all, any time anyone complains about anything around here, we’re treated as if we should just feel lucky to have a job. Hello???? That is a 2 way street. While senior management decided to keep us working this entire time, it was OUR hard work in the field that saved their jobs as well. The only thank you we have ever gotten for continuing to risk our health is through some very general company wide emails from our CEO Lisa Harper. No one has actually thanked us for anything outside of that. Our thank you was a pay cut. I’m quitting as soon as I can.

Pros

Fast paced environment. People were friendly, and company made efforts to try and improve the culture. Fun and laid back environment overall. Casual dress. Office parties for birthdays and holidays were fun. People really care about you on a personal level. As an assistant designer I was given a lot of ownership---which I did not find at my previous apparel jobs. Learned and worked with amazing cross functional partners. Learned the most from other teams I was able to work with, and I feel that I learned more at Belk than I have in the previous years working for several other apparel companies. Super nice office, cafeteria, and facilities. The barista knew me by name and so did the facilities manager. I was able to do work from home at times---which is always a plus. I truly loved what I did, which is why I give Belk such a high rating. I loved the product I worked on, and I felt really confident in my abilities when I was let go. When I think about the work I did, I feel proud & inspired. We truly believed in putting the customer first, and I could see major improvements in store. I would have probably stayed much longer if I was not laid off---if you are able to stay on board through the changes and growing pains, then I think it would be worth it. Some employees have been their for 20+ years, which I think indicates how great the experience can be for some. I think the experience really depends on who you end up working with on the day to day.

Cons

Little work life balance. High pressure. Did not feel appreciated. I loved what I did, but the environment and poor management made me dislike coming to work everyday. High stress effected my mental health poorly, and moral was not good in my area---a lot of complaining amongst colleagues that they were unhappy and wanted to leave. Lots of "re-organization" which I see now as a red flag.

Pros

The pros are the other employees at the Pineville location are amazing and down to earth.

Cons

Hostile work environment, a supervisor that doesn’t know how to communicate with her employees. The schedule is made around her family schedule so be prepared to work every day with one day off during the week. Also be prepared to do all of her work while she eats, sleeps and burps.
