A shark tank

Pros

A reward system was in place to reward an associate that makes quota.

Cons

Belk's intentionally uses ambiguous advertising to generate foot traffic. This makes customers confused and angry. Unfortunately, this means the sales associate is responsible for dealing with the aftermath. I have often heard it explained as, " you can cut the tension with a knife", when you walk in the building. This would be from a sales associate's point of view.

Horrible Place To Work

Pros

Many good associates, good employee discounts

Cons

Antiquated registers, constant harassment to get credits or extended warranties. Employees are numbers, doesn't matter if you're there 10 years or 1 year. Constant turnover. You can be scheduled to close one night and come right back the next morning to open, no thought or consideration for the employees or their families. That makes it particularly hard when the store is open later for holidays, special sales. A 10 cent an hour raise, they think is a raise. Associates who do the freight/stock are penalized because they can't make their sales objective because they are doing tag/sensors and are not able to ring as many sales.

Pros

Belk tries to focus on customer service in a way that few retailers fully do. But they do not hire enough associates to accommodate all customers needs. They also try to make you think they are getting your feedback but just do it in hopes of increased associate satisfaction. They have good products for reasonable products.

Cons

Middle managers do all the work and get paid nothing. Longggg hours and no compensation for it. Raises are pathetic and not even worth all the hard work you put into it. Constant goal changes and re-alignment in company standards. Always have hundreds of things you need to get done and always have to work late without overtime to accomplish them. Senior management wants everything to look perfect without the proper associates, fixtures, or even floor space. Felt like a pawn/slave to help customers and drive business. Also did not communicate goal change that negatively effected my year end review. All stores are different and all run differently so experiences could be varied. Worked at 2 different stores under 3 different store managers and everyone was overworked and underpaid.
