Pros

Forming friendships with your co workers

Cons

Everything was terrible. I worked for this miserable company for 4 years full time. I finally found enough self respect and quit . If you are full time, your wage will be something you can live off of, but there will be no point because you'll get the life sucked out of you every shift. Management will remind you that nothing is ever good enough . You will have about 4 different goals hanging over your head (sales, credit, presale and item locator) and are expected to meet all of them or you could be written up. Get enough write ups for not making goals and you will be fired. Mind you, all of this is being done while you are making a competitive hourly rate that is nothing special, and having no support from management. This company is cheap and only cares about the bottom line. Customer service means nothing to them. Management may whine about their poor service scores, but if corporate cares, they would not schedule one person per department with no coverage, or just leave entire departments abandoned all together. Customers hated never being able to find help, and having the newest promotion/credit card pushed on them. Some of my co workers begged customers to do item orders or credit cards , admitting that they could lose their job without the customer's help. A sad, sad way of trying to make a stupid goal for a company that doesn't care about you. There is little to no room for advancement. You will not want to advance. You will want to leave as soon as possible. Belk didn't used to be this way. They used to be good to their employees and customers. I don't recognize this company now.

Pros

Meet some interesting customers who tell you how great "belk" use to be.

Cons

All of it. You are being micromanaged into oblivion by ignorant RVPs who originate from MACYs. Next, there are GVPs who originate from MACYs as well, but they are likewise ignorant and overly controlling. You are nothing more than a tool, and after you fulfill your role, they will find someone else to whom they can give a much lower salary than they did for you. This business is solely focused on maximizing its profits while operating. Spamming customers with credit card applications is mandatory, and it's encouraged and promoted to do it dishonestly. Then, you have two hundred events all year long that you call and try to sell to. From a business perspective, nothing makes sense. They already missed one bankruptcy payment, so you can be sure they will miss another, so it's all about making as much money as they can, as quickly as they can. Nearly every retailer in northern Florida has closed, and more are expected to follow suit very shortly. Don't go here; believe the reviews here. You would be better off cleaning a sewer than coming to work here, for the sake of both your sanity and general wellbeing.

Pros

Employee discount; generous vacation time;

Cons

Absolutely no work-life balance. I came in on all my scheduled days off from Oct - mid January to try and recover the store and be there for my team. Only day off was Christmas Day. Belk expects the sales team (cashier) to make all their metrics (which means making all their goals in sales, save the sale, credit, emails, pre-sales) PLUS take care of the fitting rooms and recover the floor. And take care of the customer on the floor since we do not have floor associates or department supervisors. Not possible. They have cut the payroll hours back so far, we have lines at the registers. There is no time for anything else. The OTM - and the previous OTM - came/comes in at 5 in the morning and goes home at 7 -8. Only days off is /was when the stress made/makes them too sick to work. Antiquated equipment makes their job harder than it has to be. Always moving departments around which means never catching up with the workload.
