Pros

Being a dog walker is great, the dogs really get to know you and show you they like you and are definitely a rewarding experience.

Cons

The dogs care more about you than the management team does in certain locations. Heaven forbid you get hurt outside of the job, they either refuse to accommodate the fact that you're injured and obviously in severe pain or have you go do the furthest walk possible that makes you walk around with an injury and then they get upset because you want to relax for a moment and have people spying on you. As soon as a dog gets hurt though, they're infinitely more concerned for the dog than their employees. Had I not been moved from my location against my consent I wouldn't have had to deal with any of that because the location I transferred to to become a walker was so much better than the one I returned to, they actually did care about their workers and did not treat them like expendables.

Pros

The dogs and the nice dog owners, but that's pretty much it. If you can stomach the terribleness of this place, it is also a good way to get experience towards being hired at a another, hopefully much better dog daycare.

Cons

Almost everything, sadly. The dogs are all crammed into two tiny rooms. Too many dogs per handler, you end up extremely exhausted by the end of the day. You have to keep the place clean while picking up after 21-40 dogs per room and you're the only handler per room. That means, you're in charge of picking up and mopping up all their poop while keeping them from attacking/humping each other (because none of the dogs seem to be psychologically evaluated in group settings and are just a mish-mash of personality types that always manage to spur conflicts). They don't have relief walks for the dogs, so prepared to be afraid to touch anything (even the dogs) in the room. Also, be prepared to never want to touch your face again. The dogs poop everywhere, there's no astroturf. And, it's the poop, (watery, diarrhea, hard, smelly or smushy poop) of 21-40 dogs! You clean it up by picking it up then mopping the area, which, in my opinion, is gross. Their relief walks are *so* short, I think we have enough time to afford to do them for all the dogs. Speaking of which, the work place atmosphere is ABYSMAL. Every day in those cramped, dirty rooms where they try to cram in as many dogs as possible... You can tell the dogs hate it: they're all very stressed and are either pacing, curled up in a corner or crying/barking at the door, waiting for their opportunity to jump/run out of the rooms. (Some of the smarter ones immediately learn how to open the doors and attempt to run out themselves....). There are no toys and no walks, so nothing to facilitate calm, work-out intensive play or stimulation, especially for the dogs that don't necessarily enjoy the company of other dogs. All of that rubs off on you. You'll likely hate it. Lord knows I do. I just want to go home at the end of the day. You get so tired breaking up fights and cleaning up poop (and fighting off poop eaters) that you don't even get time to hang out with the nice, well socialized or loner dogs that seem like they obviously need attention. Just sad. The dogs are not dogs to them, they are $$$dollar signs$$$, you will learn/see this immediately; I'm only sad the customers don't. Also, coworkers suck. They are very a/ntisocial for dog lovers, almost all of them seem there just to get in and get out, some know absolutely nothing about dogs. (Sad...).
