Lies and Deception

Pros

I’ve met some great people and learned a lot.

Cons

Like others have mentioned, this organization is very dishonest in their recruiting practices. The recruiter lied to me about the salary range for my position. Management and recruiters lie to get you in the door. You leave a job for an opportunity just to find out it’s not what you think it is. Have worked at enough companies to know that certain decisions aren’t made overnight. Discussions…multiple occur before it happens. An example is RTO. Some of my colleagues were hired as 100% remote workers. They are now being told they need to come in up to 20% of the time and I’m hearing rumors about 20% being the minimum. This is not okay at all and people are leaving or thinking about leaving. Not everyone has the ability to travel that often for whatever reason. This is not a good way to retain employees. Lying to them is NOT okay. Show some grace to employees YOU told and had in their offer letters as being 100% remote. Make exceptions for those employees and make things right! BCBSA has turned into a horrible place to work. If you can’t trust your leadership even a little bit that’s not okay. I’ve never experienced something like this in my 25+ years of working for different companies. Merit increases are LOW.

Pros

Location - easy access to public transport and a great neighborhood Name - a prestigious company Longevity - most people who make it in can stay for a long time Work day - 37.5 hrs, easy to do

Cons

There is no way to prepare or mold to the politics within this organization. You either are a very political (2-faced, deceptive, appearance over substance) person or you are not. If you are not - your skills, knowledge or work ethics mean nothing. Be aware - if you work here, you may be fired for doing things other people might consider smart. I.e. working from home after hours, making LinkedIn connections (take time to notice that people currently employed there have very weak LinkedIn Profiles), introducing yourself to others within the company (all introductions and interactions are directed).

Iffy Leadeship

Pros

The work environment is low stress.

Cons

Management primarily made up of lifers (15+ years at BCBSA), which results in a reluctance to hear opinions that differ from norm/adverse to change. This drives high performers/newer employees to grow frustrated and turnover at higher rate. Management is mostly made of up employees who were promoted into position not necessarily because they can lead/manage, but through tenure. Senior leadership in partnership with HR removed “remote” and “in office” designation for employees, substituting with wanting all employees to be in office for a certain percentage of time , which was met with mostly positive reactions. However, leadership is slowly backtracking this RTO approach. Leadership hides behind not having a policy for this and handling behind the scenes on a case by case basis. Lack of clarity/policy is leading to confusion and employee frustration. They lean on the ambiguity of the guideline as subterfuge. HR department is a mess. Dated policies stagnate internal opportunities/fair compensation, which causes high turnover. Those employees considered the lifers only stayed because there was a pension plan (not available for employees who start after a certain time in the mid-2000s). Overall, the company is good to work at if you want to skate by with little responsibility. If you want to make meaningful change, you should consider another company.
