Pros

Blue Shield offers a great benefits package. Also free access to the fitness center. The hours are good, and compensation is not bad.

Cons

Promotions are not made based off performance. Promotions are made by managers who see the potential in employees with multiple degrees to advance, even if their performance doesn't back it up.

Pros

For the most part I like the people who work here Decent work-life balance Flexibility to telecommute Wellness program & free gym Charitable giving programs - lots of opportunities for volunteer/charity work Lots of focus on employee programs Opportunities for training

Cons

-Political games - We get caught up in doing work that just doesn't make sense for the company as -a whole but we do it anyway because someone wants to do things a certain way Due to a core value of "know the details" there seems to be a tendency to micromanage -Powerpoint is used way too much -Broken processes and silos - not enough sense of "we are all in this together" and let's work something out that makes sense for the company. Tendency is to protect departmental interests first -Understanding of project management varies among leaders -Too many competing priorities

A good place to work, but your mileage may vary.

Pros

In general, the staff at Blue Shield of California are smart, motivated, professional, and truly interested in doing great work. The company is not-for-profit, and has been a leading proponent of universal coverage in California and nationally. The company's size offers opportunities to grow and advance professionally, and there is usually flexibility in work location and arrangements (telecommuting).

Cons

Blue Shield suffers from the habit of continual restructuring, which is often more disruptive and destructive than constructive. Experiences, job satisfaction, and culture vary significantly from team to team.
