Pros

Important mission to change the lives of people with Type 1 Diabetes. Some good ways to make all personnel feel a real connection to the mission and understand progress in research. Really great staff - some of the best colleagues I have ever worked with. Decent salary and benefits. Good holidays and week between Christmas and New Year has recently become a vacation. Easily commutable office location. The new CEO seems to be trying to address some of the negative points mentioned below - which is a big pro for those of us here. He has set a goal to have lunch with all employees (at the NY office) over the next year and get direct feedback and suggestions.

Cons

On-boarding process (other than the general HR) not consistent across job functions requiring quite a bit of initiative upfront to understand department-specific policies and procedures which seem to change often. Multiple management, strategy, process and policy changes can be exhausting even for the most committed employees. This can make a normally positive environment a little negative. Changes can be made that make employees feel less engaged / valued despite important contributions.

Great Mission

Pros

The mission is wonderful. The support from our National Office is outstanding. Very positive experience working with our HR department, and other support functions...the best I've experienced in my 25 year career working with non-profits. Our local board members are wonderful. Benefits and salaries are good, and compare very favorably to other non-profits I've worked for.

Cons

Sr. Management has always been a challenge at JDRF. Six CEO's in 10 years; speaks volumes of the IBOD's ability to hire right. It seems as long as they have a T1D connection they're in, regardless of experience running a non-profit. One would think this group of executives would have realized this by now. The most recent previous CEO and COO were abusive. It took 4 years for the IBOD to do anything about it, allowing them to destroy careers, damage self-esteem and lose quality people along the way. New chairman took action almost immediately upon being appointed. It may take some time to undo the damage, but there are already signs that JDRF is on the way back to being a premier non-profit organization.
