Brooks blue now in the red

Pros

Brands has great admiration for runners. Sponsor a track team. Discounts on products and the ability to work out during the day

Cons

Brooks Sports has been a challenging environment to work at over the past two plus years. With yet another covert layoff in July, the once beloved brand is now on moral decline and in a serious leadership deficit. The next lay off should be at the top. The company needs to click refresh on leadership. Invest in the skill set to lead into the next decade but this time combined with the core Brooks values of what the brand once stood for. That’s not to say that leadership longevity has anything to do with having retained those core values. Poor hiring at the top line is where this went wrong. The new normal. Why are Senior managers of the 'non adding value' employees not out of a job for lack of leadership, mentorship and career guidance?! These are the questions being bantered in the hall ways. Proceed with caution. If you are in the “cool” department with a high profile manager of influence, your career has a chance for growth. If by growth you mean keeping your job. The environment now is one of “take care of yourself” until you can land elsewhere. A hand full of senior leaders have seemingly been able to create and navigate the politics of the company while the blinders are on at the very top. You should seriously weigh your options before accepting a role at Brooks. The once haven for sharp high energy talent is a black hole for honest employee recognition, competitive compensation and career growth.

Pros

1. Lots of opportunities to learn for junior/entry-level employees thanks to open office environment and exposure to senior employees 2. Product discounts making purchasing running shoes more affordable 3. You can get promoted very quickly if working for departments with high attrition 4. Good IT infrastructure and very nice IT support 5. Having the nicest people I have ever worked with in my entire career in all levels; some still there but many have left.... 6. Pay is very good at director level, regardless of number of staff 7. Charismatic CEO with appreciation for products

Cons

1. HR stretching too thin, only having resources to do administrative and recruiting tasks, not talent management including conflict management between managers and staff. 2. Too many layers of management for a small company leading to lack of transparency in decision making and performance measurement, talented employees disappearing for no clear reasons, highly political and unstable org. 3. Lack of talents and qualified leaders in key positions leading to slow or ineffective decisions 4. Silo minded org, business partnering/collaboration difficult 5. Racial and ethnic diversity lacking in senior management at HQ (director level and above) 6. Becoming an agreeable and obedient culture; passionate/strong minded employees are few; managing up more important 7. Commuting to and parking in Fremont expensive

The awkward years

Pros

Flexible schedule, pretty low key relaxed atmosphere, people want to be helpful for one another. I have been with Brooks for 3+ years. Brooks means well, wants to grow and succeed....I think this is a good place to work for a while.

Cons

The pay is really low. They will do a song and dance about how they compare in the market, the reality is that it is well below Seattle standards. Make sure to get what you want. The company offers no equity, raises are 3% ish, the health benefits aresof. This is an old school manufacturer that is turning over people and struggling to figure out how to make their product relevant and adapt to shrinking retail. Very much a slow moving, meeting heavy, must get buy in, and more buy in, then check with 10 more people before doing anything. If you are entrepreneurial, be warned...Did I mention the turnover of senior leadership? This place has been a revolving door and organizational shifting is happening frequently.
