Not perfect, but miles above similar agencies.

Pros

I think it's easy to see all of the things wrong and think the grass is greener. Having worked at other agencies and talking to friends who work at similar-sized agencies, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better place to work. We have incredible benefits; a generous amount of PTO that is encouraged to be used (probably 4-5 weeks worth including EOY shutdown, holidays, etc) Summer Fridays, good medical plans (incl. a $0 premium plan) HSA contributions, salary is competitive for WNY/CNY area. While I can't speak for every department, my manager has been absolutely wonderful and truly cares about his team. Toxic managers seem to get rooted out once HR/upper managers get involved. They don't seem to want to risk the well-being of the company for one person. My work-life balance is significantly better than my peers- both at agencies and in-house. I'd say we're well-staffed and don't wait till everyone is burnt out to hire.

Cons

There's definitely some of that weird corporate positivity, but I do think it's overall genuine. I think it's hard to feel like you individually matter in a company this large. You do need to be here for the long haul to see significant ESOP benefits, probably 10+ years. We did lay off 7 people and a handful more when Digital Hyve merged into B/T, but that's minimal compared to the large layoffs happening in similar-sized agencies. They did seem genuine in doing what they could, but we lost a larger client (not due to performance, but for their own financial reasons) and we retained most of that team. These choices looked to be performance-based and not entirely random. If you're remote, there is a sense of separation from the in-office culture, but that can be a plus depending on your preferences.

Pros

The benefits are pretty good (though pay is a little low), including generous parental leave and a holiday shutdown from Christmas to New Year. There are also a lot of learning opportunities online and in-person for both professional and personal development. If you like workplace events to mingle with coworkers, they have a lot of that too. They do really want their team to be engaged and connected with each other. BT is pretty open about the state of the company in their BT Connect meetings, as well, which is nice. Their processes are pretty solid and give a lot of structure to day to day work.

Cons

Leadership cares about the ESOP over everything, so they must remain profitable even at the expense of their team (don’t be shocked by a layoff if things are on a downturn). The ESOP is often regarded as the best benefit ever, and it probably is for leadership and management level people, but most of the employees are too early in their career to get the value. The ESOP is distributed by salary, so if you’re more entry level then your “piece of the pie” is likely so small that it’s negligible. No one on my team cared about it. Watching leadership make business decision around the ESOP can sometimes be annoying since it actually benefits so few people in the here and now. I’d also say that leadership is very corporate and kind of fake; they’ll answer any questions you have to seem transparent and honest, but it’s often a non-answer if they know the real answer isn’t great news. Leadership can also be prone to toxic positivity and won’t give you any bad news directly until absolutely necessary. If diversity is important to you, BT has gotten better over the years, but the team is still largely white women.
