TOXIC!!

Pros

Great coworkers. Too bad management makes us rat on each other.

Cons

Management is toxic. The nurse managers have no management education or managerial experience. The only feedback you will receive is punitive. The management expects the nurses to rat each other out. Nurses are expected to carry out non nursing duties that should be carried out by social work. Nurses are expected to adhere to rules (like no cell phones) while the doctors aren't punished. Any constructive criticism will be construed as complaining and a target is placed on your back. New grad nurses come to CHOC and leave the minute they have enough experience. Salaries are not competitive and there are no perks. The CNO does not advocate for her nurses. We are expected to do whatever she says and be thankful. My advice is to seek a job at UCI or Kaiser. Pension. Union.

Toxic and hostile work environment. Politics 24/7.

Pros

It is very rewarding to assist clinicians improving the health of children.

Cons

A complete lack of vision and strategy leads to passive aggressive behavior and bullying by management. Office politics is most of the job here. Incompetent or unqualified employees consistently push their work off onto their peers. When complaints or requests for training are made, you are then targeted. Empty platitudes like the "Voice of the People" program are completely ineffective when no action is taken to follow-up on the concerns raised by associates.

Nurses beware

Pros

High acuity hospital with plenty of exposure to improve your nursing skills.

Cons

Toxic environment starts from the top and trickles down to Frontline nurses. Mgmt plays favorites and puts a target on the rest. Have witnessed strong experienced rns gets terminated multiple times. If you stand up for what's right, they will shut you down if it's not in line with choc's vision. You don't know if you can trust your own coworkers because everyone is concerned about their own job security. They lose their best nurses in exchange for new grad nurses who don't know any better and get paid less.
