Pros

Great place to start your career and get hands on experience. Many people are able to leverage their experience here into great data science and engineering roles.

Cons

Management seems lost on the direction of the company. There is talk about a "product" that doesn't exist. We lost our biggest client and most people now work on "internal projects" that have very little practical application. The culture can be toxic at times. With a few notable exceptions, managers have large egos and poor management skills, which is not so surprising given the lack of experience. For some reason, we only recently hired an HR person, but still are super unprofessional when it comes to dealing with HR issues. Pay is probably as low as you'll find for a data scientist in NYC (start around 70k, top out in the 90s).

Challenging, but Enjoyable

Pros

Working on significant problems for large companies and being able to see the impact that analytics I performed has on addressing those challenges. Very open attitude in the tech approach applied towards solving each data problem, which provides opportunities to learn a broad range of skills without being tied to specific platforms or stacks. Lots of very intelligent team members that I enjoy being around. The office literally ends many weeks sitting around a meeting room for an hour having firm-provided wine and cheese and talking about things totally unrelated to work. That sort of thing never happened at my previous company.

Cons

Projects are often intense and require a rapid learning curve for new joiners. It's important to self-police and find a good work-life balance. Personally I enjoy the challenge, but it could be a bit much for some people.

Pros

Still some really nice and smart people around. Lots of social events. Decent office snacks. Benefits package has a few extra perks. Can't say I haven't learned anything while here.

Cons

The company's performance speaks for itself. There is a glaring lack of clear direction which has left the workforce demotivated and disillusioned. What was once a vibrant company full of energy is now a real mess. Seems like we just chase randomly after anything that moves without any clear plan week to week. Lots of promises from the top that consistently fail to materialize to the point that almost nobody trusts the communications being given. CEO is an extreme micro manager who lacks the experience, leadership qualities and skills to nurture and grow a technology company. Our manager frequently complains that it is hard for our team to get anything done because of the CEO's severe micromanagement of even the most trivial of tasks inside the company. He should just get out of the way and let people do their job. There have been so many departures recently that it is hard to keep track of who is even still around. Of those left it seems most of us are just waiting to finalize our next roles elsewhere until we too get out.
