Company on decline

Pros

Gift card at Christmas, casual dress, departmental parties

Cons

Small company with limited opportunity. Not a bad first/starter job, but it's low starting pay and not much growth potential. In many ways the company is a clique, which is unsettling at times. Seems everyone knew someone before they started work at COCC, and seeing someone who is not deserving get hired in your department because of a " connection" is dispiriting. It's also tough to swallow working for a manger when you have more experience and a stronger resume

In our most recent workplace survey, so many employees indicated that they “believe that COCC operates by strong values and ethics” that we exceeded the national benchmark by a whopping 18%! We’re proud that our employees believe that our values and ethics are strong, and it’s those employees who embrace and live by our values who make COCC one of the top places to work in Connecticut. Like any other company, it’s not quite feasible to promote every employee, but we have recently stepped up our process for helping employees grow their careers. Many COCC employees have enjoyed the opportunity to explore new roles, take on new projects, take additional trainings, and find any number of other ways to expand their skills and career.

Pros

Positive attitude and family atmosphere in company that tries to give a good work/life balance. Start with 20 PTO days which is great. Not in Hartford, lots of free parking, nice new building. Flexible schedule. Gym and subsidized meals on premises.

Cons

Salaries are below standard which used to be offset by benefits but now that has gone down hill as well. Insurance benefits are getting very expensive. Raises are abysmal. Initial training was sink or swim with not much documentation for backup. Management rules are different for each employee. Work at home is allowed for some 100% but others can even get a random day here and there which is unfair and causes resentment within departments. Lots of nepotism.

For a company its size, COCC offers very competitive benefit plans and generous subsidies to HSA accounts and health plan costs. Like most employers, we have had to move away from expensive co-pay plans to high deductible plans. However, we have increased the contribution amount to employee HSA accounts to help offset out-of-pocket expenses. We offer onsite counseling with insurance and financial planning professionals to help our employees most effectively plan for their financial well-being. Recently, we have been reviewing and formalizing all work from home agreements to ensure they are consistently applied and will continue to allow flexibility between managers and employees to accommodate extenuating circumstances.
