Pros

--For a non-profit, it has pretty good benefits. What they can't give you in salary they make up for with benefits --Projects are interesting, work in some of the most challenging countries in the world --Employee development opportunities through various trainings, though there could be more of this --Good opinion of upper management, especially since they have had to make some tough decisions the past few years. Internal issues get resolved with the higher-ups

Cons

--Team dynamics really vary from team to team. Other colleagues don't have a great team dynamic, and they feel stuck --It takes FOREVER to make decisions in this organization. Possibly because people are so busy. But CRDF Global will make a committee to talk about an issue, and then getting action items done is like pulling teeth. --Annual pay increases are dismal. But there is usually a bonus to try to make up for it.

Pros

Comfortable work environment, office is new and modern. Workload among staff seemed balanced for most. Excellent benefits which include weekly telecommuting, summer flex and tuition reimbursement. Company events were well-put together. Overall, a decent place for a year or two.

Cons

As far as office culture, there are quite of few employees who are not particularly friendly nor inclusive...quite a few introverts on staff. Not the type of environment where someone will smile and say 'Good Morning' as they pass by you. I would have to agree with a previous post regarding gossip around the office being plentiful and distracting. Promotions seemed very unbalanced and given to those mainly working within programs (and even those were limited). Friends of managers would get promoted more quickly than other employees. Longtime employees were laid-off so there may be concerns of funding issues along with outsourcing of certain functions. Salaries are low (its a nonprofit organization, so not surprising), and increases are minimal (you're forced to leave or will have to snag a promotion if you don't want to continue receiving very small salary increases per year). Manager was not interested with my career growth and actually impeded it, plus promoted a culture of blame rather than finding solutions to issues that arose. Company's administrative functions could be more organized. The company's strategic vision was not as clear as it could be, and a lot of company resources seemed unnecessarily spent on superficial company communications/rebranding efforts instead of proposal submissions/finding new sources of funding/organizational development.

Pros

Staff at entry-level and middle management level are young, smart, capable, friendly, and internationally-oriented. Great place to make like-minded friends and work closely with partners all around the world. Work-life balance can depend on the department but is generally fair to good. Good springboard to jobs in the US government, particularly funding agencies.

Cons

Communication between departments and from top-down is poor. There is a culture of gossip and it seems some staff are privy to more sensitive information than others. Senior management does not do a good job of articulating the strategic direction and inspiring staff with a clear vision and mission. Turnover is very high, and no one seemed to be addressing it. Promotion standards are hazy across the organization and seem to vary depending on the individual/department, which probably contributes to the turnover, as does compensation, which was low for the field.
