Canon is following Kodak

Pros

Nice people and nice offices

Cons

The company is stuck in the past and is very inflexible about many things (remote work, time off, etc). Management has a very old school mentality and business units do not trust each other or share information. The company is trying to cut costs which means layoffs and downsizing. They have laid off over 100 people this year alone over multiple locations but they keep it off the record so the number is probably higher. Management is afraid of change and it is going to lead them down the same road as Kodak. To be fair they are trying to broaden their portfolio and move away from the camera and office supply businesses. However executives are not taking the time to learn the industries they are trying to get into. This has, and will continue to, lead to failed starts and closed business units. If you are considering Canon I would say they will be ok for a few more years so long as you work at their main offices. They are looking to downsize or close many of their smaller subsidiaries by the end of 2019. Don’t assume that just because they are hiring the location is safe. I know several instances where they hired people only weeks before shutting a location down.

Horrible Management & Culture

Pros

Reasonable benefit, regular working hours. If you just want to get paid, it’s good place to work.

Cons

Canon’s business is not doing well. There have been some layoffs and closed branches. It’s difficult to predict this office’s future. The atmosphere of this division is: No praise for employees. Getting promotions will take time, and no reward to people who really contribute to the company. Also, only some people work hard because they don’t have to be worried about meeting their deadlines. Due to lack of internal communication, some employees don’t even know they have to do. Management doesn’t convey a sense of leadership and lacks problem solving skills.

Life depends on your manager

Pros

Nice 401K match and profit sharing, benefits, nice campus

Cons

Strict Japanese culture. Slow to promote (if ever). New program "Every minute Counts", meaning everyone must be at their workstation at 9 am. No flexibility (no tele-flex, alternative schedule, work from home etc,.,). Strong favoritism ( if you are a favorite, then promotions and some flexibility is yours... if you are not, you are treated like the ugly red headed step child) If complaints are made to HR you soon realize that they back the division not the employee. You will never feel safe. No one has your back
