I was sexually harassed at work by a customer to the point that I was extremely uncomfortable and I felt unsafe. I went to grab my manager as I had no training on how to handle a situation like this at work. I told the manager on duty everything that the person had said to me and how they were making me feel. The manager went out and not only continued to help the customer who was harassing me but gave them a company discount. When I confronted my manager as to why they continued to help the customer instead of call security, they told me they thought I said the customer was making "jokes" about me that made me uncomfortable (even though I had told my manager exactly what was being said to me by this customer. It was more than jokes and it was making me feel unsafe.) My manager on duty did not listen to me when I was in need of help and I was told that Carhartt has no policy on sexual harassment in the workplace, therefore they did not know how to handle the situation. Not only did I feel hurt that my manager did nothing to help me, but I felt very unsafe to walk to my car that night in fear that the customer would be waiting for me because of the things they said they were wanting to do. You would think that a company as big as Carhartt would have some sort of policy or training for their employees around sexual harassment but apparently they do not. COME ON. It's 2019. Get with it. My new employer has made it clear to me on their sexual harassment policies and what steps to take if I ever need to. I feel much better going to a new workplace that has my back.
