Pros

It's a job. Direct Deposit

Cons

Pay is below average. They overwork their employees. No work-life balance. They won't hesitate to call you at night, weekends or vacations to ask you to work. They won't hesitate to demand that you work all weekend or all night. My boss emailed me a new assignment at 7 PM and then called me at midnight (same day) to ensure that I would have it done by 1 AM!!! Was I recognized or thanked or given comp time for this? Of course not! Was this the only time? Of course not! The work at home policy is inconsistent within the company - some groups allow you to do it, others apply a zero work at home. They "recognize" their top employees with "awards" but not in a tangible way such as promotions, pay raises, or bonuses. They used to be able to get away with offering every employee stock options to keep them happy, but now that their stock has dropped over 50% from when I started, my stock options are completely worthless.

Pros

The only reason why you would work for Cbeyond is to get a better job down the road. At least in Chicago, other companies hiring managers know the grueling nature the employees of Cbeyond go through. Because of this, if you do well here you can write your own ticket elsewhere. That is the ONLY reason why someone would accept a job here.

Cons

First, the salary they pay you is low. They also expect you to work roughly 60 hours a week and not get paid for the overtime you put in either. They expect you to come back to the office after your day is over to check in for 15 minutes. Because of this, you can spend upwards of another hour and a half of driving time each day to do this. The company is totally micromanaged. It seems you have to check in with your manager every 15 minutes and if you don't, you will get texts, emails and countless calls until you do. They give you $200-300/mo in gas allowance. Considering they have not raised this since 2000, you will spend an additional $300-$400/mo out of your own pocket just to do your job. The sad part of about this job, is when you are out in the field, you almost feel like a door-to-door vacuum salesman. Rain, snow or shine, you have to walk door-to-door soliciting new business. Getting thrown out of buildings because you have gone in there a dozen times in a month is always fun. As soon as any owner heres that we are with Cbeyond, their first words out of their mouth are "get out!" The turnover here is ridiculous as well. The average person will only last a couple of months here either because they get burned out that quickly or it actually costs them money to work here.

Pros

Company is in a growth mode. Good product set.

Cons

Difficult to work cross-functionally. Very little focus on the customer. Customer satisfaction not taken seriously. Very much a command and control company and always trying to figure out who to blame if things go wrong. This is particularly true on the Operations side. If you were not one of the early people in the founding of the company, you were pretty much an outsider.
