Pros

I love this company. Obviously, it is not perfect, but everyone is genuinely trying to do right by customers, the community, and fellow employees. By and large, customers love the product & what it can do for their businesses. Overall, Chef is a leader in the field, both from a product standpoint and culturally. The company has a very bright future.

Cons

Typical, inevitable problems of a startup growing at lightning speed, mostly related to trying to keep ahead of the curve in processes anywhere from HR to sales to product development. Also, many managers who were promoted into those roles from within need more training on how to be people managers and not just act as senior contributors. Sometimes there are too many competing priorities and it seems like everything is urgent. The product space we live in is increasingly heating up and Chef's been slower than expected in responding to new competitors. We need to establish focus on the things that really matter but first we have to prioritize them.

Best Career I've Ever Had

Pros

People care about my well-being. Initiative is rewarded. Constantly challenged and surrounded by smart people working at their best, and I'm always working to keep up. Opportunities to try new things are endless. Warm and welcoming culture, best I've ever worked around. Upper management is stacked with the best and brightest people in the industry.

Cons

Dozens of people have talked to me about having severe cases of imposter syndrome after working here. So many smart people all the time, it gets overwhelming. I know that's like a BS "What is your greatest weakness" interview question, but seriously. It's an issue, sometimes I just feel paralyzed by insecurity for weeks at a time, and it seems to be something that happens to lots of people. It can be very difficult for information to flow correctly from customers & customer-facing teams to engineering.

Pros

Chef is known in the industry as having an incredible culture, and before joining the company, I wondered how much of that was just urban legend. Believe me: it's true. And somehow, it's better. It's an amazing place where there is a real chance to contribute and make a change, because it's a startup and there is so much to be done, and you have a real cheerleader at every turn. And concerns or questions (even hard questions) are listened to and accepted with care and respect. I love this company. LOVE.

Cons

The only real cons are those that come from working at a start-up: there's a lot to be done. But that's what makes it exciting: so many ways to contribute! And the company *does not* want their employees killing themselves, so at the same time, it's also not "just another start-up." Have I mentioned I love this company? It's fast-paced, but awesome.
