Pros

So many creative people to work with, and the product is amazing. I loved the location of the office.

Cons

They have a promotion structure that makes it hard to move up quickly, even if you do good work. Also, the hours are extremely long and the pay is awful.

We appreciate this feedback. It is always our goal to help our employees develop and progress in their careers at Chronicle Books. We also value a good work/life balance with most employees working a typical 9-6pm schedule and many take advantage of flexible work arrangements (flexible hours, working from home, etc.) as needed and as appropriate for their roles. We also strive to maintain above average salaries for the publishing industry, and our annual profit share bonus is rare for publishing companies.

Pros

It is a friendly environment filled with passionate and hard working individuals. There can be flexibility around schedules which is always appreciated.

Cons

Low pay makes it hard to live in the Bay Area. They never hire temps when someone has a longer absence which puts strain and pressure on the rest of the team. Lots of turnover also creates more work for those who do stay on, and it unfortunately is constant.

Amazing Company to Intern For

Pros

-Lovely group of people to work with; my team truly made me feel valued and entrusted me with more responsibility than I've been given interning at other publishing houses -Creative, collaborative atmosphere -Great work/life balance -There was some kind of event, party, or workshop almost every week. I really enjoyed going to these because they gave me great opportunities to network and learn more about the different roles in the publishing industry -Gorgeous books, gorgeous building

Cons

-Several upper management employees left the company during my internship, so everything was a bit disorganized; that being said, my supervisors handled it as well as they could -Interns rarely get hired full-time
