Phone calls and micromanagement

Pros

Great colleagues (you bond with them over how dreadful the day to day is) Above average starting pay for people in their 20s.

Cons

Everyday at CoStar is a fire drill. Upper management has an obsession with phone calls to he point where clients routinely question why we call so much. Even if you have a great manager (I was fortunate enough to have one), the micromanagement that trickles down from the top permeates all levels of the company. Your entire day is monitored and everything you do is a metric. If you ever socialize with coworkers after work, the only thing that is discussed is how much everyone hates their jobs. There is no point in questioning the metrics or why there is such an obsession with phone calls. A former manager told me several times in private that the metrics make no sense and to just try and get as many pointless 90 second calls as possible to make directors happy. The job became even more unbearable in the past year because of insane turnover. Every team is severely understaffed. The company’s reputation makes hiring enough people to keep up with attrition very challenging.

Pros

If you get hired out of school the pay is phenomenal. In fact it’s rather hilarious to see how jaded a lot of the new workforce members become. Can’t blame them though because costar pays 3x more than my first job out of college. Richmond location is pretty cool as well.

Cons

Corporate is as fake as it gets. The diversity and inclusion program was halfway thrown together by grabbing a couple people to interview over zoom to which they just tried to sell their books. Not saying it was a complete waste of time but absolutely minimal effort here to check a box by CoStar. Talk a lot of big game about diversity but still had to work June-teenth. Enough said. Bottom line is that you’re just a number and 100% expendable. Everything CoStar does for employees it does for optics. You can be employee of the month then fired the next day for any reason. It’s fear based management which is why most people who value themselves leave. Yes, the CEO is crazy. He takes every chance he gets to wave his liberal views in our faces while at the same time does his best to milk every capitalist penny like he’s Rockefeller. It’s quite entertaining to watch the contradictory actions between what he does and what he says. This isn’t that big of a deal however when you understand that you’re just there for a paycheck. Kind of sucks but this is more of a sweat shop environment than a startup. Just know that and it’ll be more manageable. Metrics are ridiculous as well and no your feedback won’t be heard. Overachievers get targeted for more projects and a heavier workload so there’s no incentive to perform above the average. Work here for a year to get experience, keep your head down and move on. Save money. If you get a cool manager maybe do 2 years max with a tight resume ready because any day could still be your last.

Pros

- Some people are great, enough to make it really hard to leave. - They allow one WFH day. - Health Insurance is insanely good, but I feel like they do this so it makes it hard to leave. - They give you the freedom to work on different technologies.

Cons

- Sales dictates deadlines and requirements, even when they are unrealistic and no one fights this. - Insane work hours for development. - Unrealistic goals and deadlines. - Everything is rushed, quality is not a concern or required. - Development team does not get bonuses, however, Upper management and Sales gets bonuses for all the work that is done by the Development Team. - Development Team has no protection from Sales, Consulting, and Client Services. - There are constant bully and strong arm tactics against the Development Team. - Even though this is a Tech Company, it doesn't act like it at all. There's no respect or common courtesy given to the Development Team. - They have the mentality of "Work till you burn out, then replace you". - For raises, they have the mentality of "Quit, then reapply to re-negotiate your wages". - They do not allow anyone to move latterly into other positions. This company has a knack for stonewalling talented, loyal employees, causing them to leave.
