Working at College Board

Pros

Health, sick leave and tuition assistance for employee and dependents after 5 years of service are very good. Generous PTO, sick leave for self and family are better than most places. Annual salary increases have averaged about 3% last few years, and staff also receive a bonus %2-%8 depending on their annual review ratings. College Board is actually a very good place for early career professionals to learn, grow and establish networks that will equip you for future other positions and organizations. The work that most divisions do is actually meaningful. If you apply you should aggressively negotiate your salary; all future salary increases and bonuses will be based off of your starting salary. For most of the staff, the politics won't impact your ability to learn and grow. Overall, the College Board is a good place to work.

Cons

It can be very difficult to move up in the organization or to receive any sort of salary increase for exemplary performance outside of bonus cycle - raises outside of annual increase aren't a thing. Once you hit director level, there just aren't as many opportunities. Stated mission is to support students, but senior leadership actions seems to be focused on making money and increasing reserve ($1billion!!). Check Goldstar for SLT salaries. Definitely an "in-crowd" in SLT resulting in some divisions currently led by very toxic leaders. There is a lot of lip service paid to values and operating principles that just are not reflected in senior leadership actions and decisions. Fortunately, this isn't visible to most staff and doesn't completely negatively impact staff engagement.

Pros

Many of the people are great to work with, and the benefits are fantastic—like working for an old blue-chip company rather than a nonprofit.

Cons

Management is inconsistent. There is an "in-crowd" who never gets in trouble, and there is an out-crowd that gets cleaned out for the new restructuring fad. Rules change all the time, and the whole racket seems to just support upper management's income.

Pros

There are a number of bright people who work here who truly care about the organization's mission.

Cons

Unfortunately, many of those bright people are ignored or overlooked by senior leaders. The future looks bleak for the College Board and the organization has done little to appropriately prepare for what is to come.
