Working at Color seemed great at the beginning. Fun culture and cool mission. If you got this job after all the interviews, you're thinking to yourself "wow I have a job at a tech company". But the longer you stay at this company, the more you realize there's something wrong.
1) Most people at the ground level are great. I'd grab a beer with them. Most are like minded and want to work hard and do good in the world. It's when you get to middle management (MM) that things crumble. MM is full of people who have never managed before and it shows. For a lot of people it's their first time managing people and they do it poorly on many occasions. The time management, communication, and organization leaves much to be desired. A lot of them are simply young and do not know how to be mature humans. Be prepared for them to take credit for your work too. What's worse, sometimes your manager won't even know your name. Cringe.
2) Boy's club. There are a LOT of times when you'll see people get jobs or promotions simply because they're friends with the hiring manager. Nepotism is rampant at Color. Just read the other reviews. There are backroom deals going on and people will be promised a job while there are will people interviewing for it. And aside from that, you will see people hired with ZERO experience in the position they filled and it makes you wonder why on earth they are there.
3) Lack of DEI. No matter what they say, DEI simply is not a priority to them. The ERGs are a joke and don't do anything constructive. I've brought to attention things that need improvement and they are swept under the rug. If you're a BIPOC LGBTQI+, good luck. The higher up your go, the whiter it gets. Also I experienced what many I've talked to would call sexism and racism from HR. There's also a huge pay gap disparity. The people who work right next to you will often times be paid a vastly different amount than you for no reason. When I say vastly, I mean sometimes as much as 50%+ difference in compensation for the same job with the same background.
4) "Building the plane as you fly it" is something you will hear ALL the time. After a while at your job, you're going to see that you're still building that proverbial plane. It all seems like a hastily put together high school group project. You will offer suggestions, but those will most likely be ignored by your managers. Procedures will be created, but those will be forgotten. You will move from one crisis to another and say to yourself "this is fine"
5) Improper training. This is an amalgamation of all the issues I mention above. Many times, your training is simply shadowing someone for a few days. It's one big game of telephone where the person training you tells you "this is how we do things" and then you go on to train someone and you tell them "this is how we do things". You can see where at a health tech company this might not be the best thing.
6) FIRE HAPPY. Every month there is 1 person you worked with that is just gone for no reason. No one tells you anything. No one tells you why. They're just GONE. The whole time you're fearing if it's going to be you next. I think this is a way for them to control you. You'll see that the only people left are "yes" people and followers.
7) Patient safety. What should be the most important thing is seemingly the last thing on peoples' minds. This is an unmistakable, objective, and real thing: the people at Color, as well as the clinical staff we are paired with, are not given the proper training, tools, and supplies to provide patient safety. The priority simply isn't there. I've seen patients harmed due to this despite everyone bringing up this issue. What matters are the emojis on Slack.
One last thing. No one is your friend here. There's always someone who will rat on you. A lot of what I write could be chalked up to a disgruntled employee; a statistical outlier that can be tossed out, and if I were reading these reviews I would think the same thing. But for those of you reading this and living for it, hi. I see you. I feel you. I am you.
If you're thinking about joining this company and you need the job, just take the money and keep your head low. Use it as a platform to get your next job. Good luck! TCIF!
