Helping people is satisfying

Pros

Common Ground's sole mission and purpose is to help people in crisis. The work I do is life-changing for the people I serve and there are rewards beyond money that come from doing this job. We help everyone with mental illness, substance use disorders, victims of crime, victims of bullying, and at-risk youth. The company also helps employees who are in crisis and upper management has created opportunities for giving back in many ways. Dating back a decade, I have personally helped save dozens of lives and positively affected the lives of hundreds of adults, families, and children.

Cons

This field is dangerous, plain and simple. We work with people who are in crisis which means that we are often seeing them at their worst and most violent. Sometimes patients are double the size of staff, and we are under equipped to handle the size difference. Supervisors and managers rarely can offer a solution and lack empathy. Upper management seems to care, but they rely upon lower managers to solve issues and those solutions are slow to come. Most managers are so out of touch that it can negatively affect morale if we're not careful.

Pros

Many hours available on a contingent basis

Cons

Absolutely the most toxic work environment I've ever encountered. Management plays definite favorites, refuses to engage with colleagues in promoting change within the agency and changes the standard of work constantly. Recipient rights violations are abundant. Poor client care. Just the worst, cannot stress this enough.

Pros

Significant purpose. Sanctuary and Crisis Residential Unit are the best managed operations of the entire organization.

Cons

- very little ability to grow to meet the needs of the community -leadership unable to design a long term strategic plan with realistic goals and objectives -Positions directly supporting individuals in crisis earn extremely low wages considering the significance of their role -Inefficient business operations - some programs have HUGE impact, while others seem to only exist to prevent the job loss of someone who has worked there for many years
