Global poverty is a complex and pervasive issue that deserves the focus of a highly skilled and experienced workforce that can navigate high levels of managerial complexity and challenge. At Compassion, we believe the best way to honor the generous giving of any supporter is to wisely steward and invest in the resources that are entrusted to us, including our human resources, in order to elevate the effectiveness and efficiency of our efforts to transform the lives of the children in poverty we are called to serve. At the same time, we also believe that each employee’s commitment to our mission should flow out of a deep sense of God-given calling … nothing less. As such, we do not position compensation as a driving motivator to attract staff or generate performance. The reality is that the majority of our top executives experienced significant compensation reductions to join Compassion’s cause. Compensation for the executives charged with guiding our complex, multinational ministry is determined by our independent board of directors, based on recommendations from a third-party compensation consulting firm, with our salary targets being at or below the midpoint of relevant comparables. Furthermore, Compassion’s size provides a level of efficiency and economies of scale that allow us to proportionately invest a smaller percentage of donations in top executive compensation than most smaller organizations.
