Pros

Cotopaxi has been the highlight of my career. I've never worked for a company that earnestly cares about its mission to the extent Cotopaxi does. It's also thrilling to be part of such a fast-growing brand and work alongside such a heart-felt, scrappy team. Everyone in the company is friendly and hard-working. We've all been through a lot together, and our team strength got us through 2020. Even with the challenges, last year ended up being the most meaningful of my career. The company gave close to 1 million dollars in grants and stood by its employees. Leadership took salary cuts, provided free mental health counseling to all employees, and gave bonuses to everyone for getting the brand through the year successfully. During my three year tenure, the leadership has demonstrated a strong willingness to evolve and listen over time and make themselves available to all employees. In the last year, they've invested heavily in HR and now offer the best people support I've experienced. As a woman with a disability, I've found this company an amazing place to be, especially this last year.

Cons

Cotopaxi is still a startup. The pace of growth can be exhausting at times and executing while also building processes can be challenging. But, it's also deeply rewarding. I also think the company could do more to promote DEI internally. It's done a great job with its marketing, promoting women into leadership roles, and diverse grant giving, but our workforce could be more diverse. I have no doubt leadership will show improvement here.

Great Company Full of Growth and Learning

Pros

-You get out what you put in here at Cotopaxi. Because Cotopaxi is a smaller company experiencing phenomenal growth year over year, all the employees here have widespread responsibilities and get to be a part of many different projects within the company. Management has a lot of trust in their employees, which has allowed me personally to consistently grow and evolve in my role. -The Exec team is very transparent and upfront when it comes to the company and is always willing to have an open conversation on what they can do to improve. It is refreshing to have an Exec team open to receiving feedback and taking all points into consideration. They have also continuously checked in on the well-being of their employees throughout the pandemic on a personal level which has been much appreciated. -The people you work with are great and are always willing to help you, even cross-departmentally. Everyone who works here has their own areas of expertise and willing to share that knowledge with you. People are also good about admitting their weaknesses and reaching out for help if needed. This is the type of transparency a company needs in order to grow and evolve together. Everyone here is very coachable and open to better ways of doing things. -Work/Life Balance. The Exec team is constantly encouraging their employees to take time off if needed. In the Wild Time is also encouraged where you can spend up to 10% of your work week outside

Cons

-Although there are many learning opportunities where you can expand your skill set at Cotopaxi, career growth through promotions can be difficult. Because of the size of the company and smaller departments, there really are no positions to get promoted into. You can take on more responsibility and engage in other learning opportunities, but your title most likely won’t change. This may change in upcoming years as the company grows and I know it is something management is actively working on. -Because the company is growing so much, everyone has been rallying together to meet the business’s needs in this time of growth. Although the comradery and teamwork has been a beautiful thing to see and a great thing to be a part of, I feel as though people have not had the opportunity to take In the Wild Time or time for themselves to reset although encouraged by the Executive Team.

Positive exit, great place to work

Pros

You learn a lot about a company when you leave, and my exit reaffirmed my positive feelings for Cotopaxi. I was laid off as a result of budget cuts, and while I was very sad to leave, I was also very impressed by how the executive team handled it. It was made clear to me that they did not take the decision lightly, and they genuinely cared about my success. All of the executive team dedicated time to helping me transition, and leveraged their personal contacts to help me get another job.

Cons

Cotopaxi, like any company, is imperfect. Some of those imperfections can be amplified by the strains of growing, but the Cotopaxi management is true to their core values and, in my case at least, are succeeding in living up to their mantra of "Do Good".

Cotopaxi Response

Earlier this year, as we refocused our efforts on areas of high-growth in the business, we decided to shift some of our resources away from our Questival events, which are amazing, but not growing like the rest of the business. Sadly, this meant an impact on two employees that we loved dearly. It still makes me sick thinking about it, even three months later. I personally spent time working with the two of them post-departure to help in any way in landing them a job at another company. I wrote countless emails to other CEO’s and wrote letters of recommendation. These two employees were world-class and it was a huge loss for our company to lose them. I’m still sad about it. - Davis Smith, CEO
