Thank you for your feedback and contributions to our DC team. As you know, we've outgrown our facility and have needed to install temporary racking. This has indeed led to subpar lighting, especially in the northern most aisles, despite the additional temp lighting installed. The good news is that those days are numbered - our new building is coming online soon, and we will have properly designed and dedicated lighting above each racking aisle. We try to support our hardworking DC team as best as we can during this exciting growth phase, and we're very grateful for their admirable teamwork, commitment and dedication to Cotopaxi.

Best place to work retail

Pros

Lots of companies throw around buzzwords about how they're a great place to work at, but Cotopaxi actually lives up to its "Do Good" motto. Employees are treated with respect and compassion. When life happens, they're willing to work with you to accommodate. While other retailers separate their retail staff from their corporate staff, Cotopaxi treats everyone the same. And you have a voice. Your manager listens to you, and the leadership team does not exist in a bubble. The Slack includes everyone, so you can reach leadership if you need. Similarly, you're also privy to company strategy, new products, and events. In other words, you matter, and so does your input. In regards to salary, the hourly wages for retail guides are competitive and while it's not commissioned-based, there are incentives for performing at a top level. You also get a steep discount on all merch, which, considering that most Coto employees were fans first before employees, is a huge perk. Discounts to other outdoor retailers are also offered. On top of that, retail guides are offered a 401k. The benefits are good, not great, but there is room for advancement to corporate, which is maybe the best reason to work here. It's not uncommon for employees to spend a year or so in retail before making a move up the ladder. Employees have first dibs on job openings, so you have a big advantage over non-employees. As long as you have marketable skills that can benefit the company, working for corporate is a possibility. To summarize, it's a great place to work at.

Cons

There's no health insurance offered to retail guides, but that's about it.

Pros

I’ve been working for Cotopaxi for about a year and have 12+ years of experience in the outdoor and ski industries. It’s a fast growing, high energy atmosphere. The people who work here are genuinely nice and thoughtful colleagues. The “Do Good” culture is evident throughout every aspect of the organization. People treat one another with respect and appreciation. In general, the organization does a great job of acknowledging accomplishments and publicly applauding staff for their contributions. The company is growing rapidly and ever changing. Opportunities for promotion and role change or exploration exist especially in entry or mid-level positions. In general, the leadership team supports people’s passions and provides opportunities for education and professional development. If you see an opportunity or project you’d like to pursue, your manager is likely to support you. I’ve been impressed with transparency and communication from the executive team. Most employees have a weekly or biweekly 1:1 meeting with their manager as well as a monthly all staff meeting. Company goals are clearly communicated across the organization. Each functional team and individual’s goals roll up in accordance with company goals. The 1:1 meeting provides a regular touchpoint for feedback in a supportive, confidential environment. The executive team is actively listening to employees. They genuinely care about the company culture and overall moral. They use regular surveys and open question sessions to keep a finger on the pulse and adjust their plans accordingly. This has been so refreshing for me! I’ve never worked for a company that listens and reacts so quickly and confidently in response to employee feedback. For example, when I was applying a year ago, I remember reading reviews on Glassdoor about a lack of HR department. 12 months later, Cotopaxi now has a full HR department with two employees. If you are reading this review and considering a job at Cotopaxi, I would recommend applying. Cotopaxi is doing meaningful work in all aspects – marketing, impact, experiences, and product. With explosive growth rates, the sky is the limit for this brand.

Cons

Not necessarily a negative but rapid growth forces people to juggle heavy workloads and wear multiple hats. Plans may change quickly based on opportunity so it's best to remain open minded and nimble and not get too attached to any one path.
