Pros

Cruise Automation moved very fast when I was there. I was lucky to see the team I was a part of expand from roughly a dozen individuals to 4-5 times the size by the time I left. The team was fun to work with. The work we did was impactful and it was good seeing progress on development on a day-to-day basis.

Cons

Although Cruise is a big player in this industry, most of the AVT ops team consisted of contractors. Contractors are treated poorly and looked down upon by many of the full-time staff. Rampant disrespect toward contracted team members was prevalent and it negatively affected team morale.

Seems to be filled with toxic mismanagement and nepotism

Pros

Overall rating - 1.5 but rounding up to 2. I truly enjoyed working here my first two years. People on all teams were collaborative and friendly. The end of year bonus structure is generous and it seems that there's finally a fully-staffed Compensation team dedicated to improving pay ranges. Working on AVs is interesting.

Cons

- There is not a lot of transparency with funding and lots of mixed signals about runway (layoffs but CEO attempting to acquire other companies) - Stunted career growth on all sides - Upper management, especially on the HR and People teams, is incredibly biased and seem to prioritize hiring their friends for senior roles (Dropbox, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, FB, Google) and like to empire build their orgs; also, no one holds them accountable - HR issues and tickets take a long time to resolve - OKRs are quantitative but not qualitative - Too much spend and focus on Marketing and Brand, it is embarrassing - Culture promise "YES" men and all others are penalized if they do not agree

Pros

There are some good, talented, motivated people in the trenches. That's really it.

Cons

- Kyle has a very weird genghis-khan like approach to the company. "Because Kyle said so" is a common refrain, even if we have data that shows the contrary. No way to "appeal" these rulings, either, despite how "open" leadership tells the company they are. - No career progression. If you get lucky, are in the exact specific specialty they shine their light on in the right quarter, you might get promoted once. At that point, it's safe to start looking for a new job. - Constant fighting and competition between directors, to the point where I've seen many decisions be made to spite other teams, or to increase one's role/responsibility at the cost of forward progress. - The leadership team seems to think they know what they are doing because of their success with twitch, but I am scared to see what the engineering culture was like there with them in charge. - HR is run by a bunch of snakes, who have eroded all trust they ever had (as evidenced by employee satisfaction surveys). - Most recent employee satisfaction survey results are really, really bad- and since joining, they've only been getting worse. Not just "bad", but actually atrocious. F--- level atrocious. 2/10 across the board level atrocious. - Management actively shoots itself in the foot, frequently. And has also eroded company-wide trust (employee satisfaction surveys). - HR likes to tell everyone that their comp is matched to top tier companies... except that it's not. - "How much can they say without saying anything" has been a running joke while watching all-hands meetings for over a year now. - A top-down company culture of dishonesty: both internal and external.
