Pros

DHI Mortgage has strong training programs that are not often provided in this industry. The company offers stability as it is backed by the largest homebuilder.

Cons

The job description was not accurately portrayed in the interviewing process and would not have left current position if it had been. The topic of overtime should be expounded on as there is no life balance in the closing/post closing departments. Overtime is expected and mandatory. This does not occur occasionally as stated in responses but rather two weeks out of every month (60 -70 hours). If it is a quarter end all employees are required to work late nights often starting early in the month. Mandatory weekends and holidays are presented by management in writing. The closing staff is paid OT and very high bonus plans however this is not true for management. The department is micro managed to the point of employees often leaving work in tears. Had a coaching session by manager (as a manager) about taking a lunch on a busy Friday and how it upset three subordinates. The person filling this position will have a hard time succeeding within the current management control unless works well with passive aggressive micro managing. Micro managed to the point emails to my team had to be proof read by my manager prior to sending. Employees are often coached for having to leave on time to take care of family obligations. This was by far my worst work experience having celebrated 30 years of mortgage banking. Departed with valuable lessons of what NOT to do in my future management positions. Very humbling experience.

We appreciate you submitting comments about your time with DHIM and your positive feedback related to our strong training programs. Whenever meeting with candidates, we often stress the fast paced environment we maintain and the fact that our teammates work very hard to support our customers. We’ll continue to do this to insure future teammates have the proper expectations. Understanding life/work balance is critical to long term happiness and success for the team, senior management constantly works to put systems and personnel in place to support the team. We’ll continue to recruit, hire and train the best in the business so that our team structure and support is sound, benefitting both the team members and the customers we serve.

For being such a large company and the #1 homebuilder in America they really do have a close relationship with the employees. They offer great incentives and value employees. What you put in is what you get out.

Pros

I feel that this is the best company around. I have the utmost respect for the executive management and the overall culture. The benefits are far better than most companies. The pay is also above average for the market. I work in the Austin office. If you want to learn the mortgage industry this is the place to be. The opportunities are endless. They do things the right way and will back you if you find something not quite right.

Cons

As with any company there are areas that could be improved on. Everyone has their own ideas of how things could better or changed. I do think that many people do not have the big picture of what it takes to run a company the size of DR Horton. The regulations today have become very cumbersome and exact. Most people only see their department and not how every department fits into the whole home buying process. While I feel it is a great company and there is a lot of communication I do think that many times it does not get down to the worker bees. There are a lot of meetings and information to middle managers and supervisors but it does not get to the ones that need to know the most. Also employees learn more from their coworkers than the training department. The training department just reads bulletins or courses. I believe there should be more hands on training. Classes should be smaller where people can interact with each other instead of 75 to 100 people on a call where the instructor just reads the information. There could be some real examples and situations that employees can actually learn from. You can't go to your manager when they were on the same call and do not know the information either. There could be hands on manager training so they could help their employees with questions. But then again I do understand the constraints of training new employees. There also seems to be cliques and if you are not a part of them, you usually do not know what is going on. My area has 2 VP's, and asst VP and middle managers. Everyone but 2 of the middle managers are a group and spend time together. The other 2 are usually left out of company information but then are expected to know it. Don't get me wrong, these are not issues specific to DHI. There are negatives everywhere even if you ran your own company. I feel the greatness of the company out weighs the negative. Also not everyone is there for the company or to do the right thing. Then again some people just want to complain or be drama kings and queens.

We appreciate your service with DHI and for taking the time to comment. We do focus on living our motto “The Right People, The Right Way” which I think helps support your thought that DHI is one of the best companies to work for. With changing regulations, the training necessary to effectively comply has become expansive. As our company continues to grow, we have expanded our training team and the resources available to ensure success for all DHI teammates. We will continue to focus on communication involving all teammates and ways to further provide interactive training opportunities. During our webinar trainings and in office trainings, please don’t hesitate to speak up, ask questions or provide comments. When we do need to conduct larger trainings, this type of interaction from the participants will help us understand how effectively the information is being provided and ultimately makes the training better for everyone.
