Great colleagues and skills learned, but poor management

Pros

- Met some great people that I am still in contact with - Learned new skills

Cons

- Bad management. When I told my supervisor that I was burnt out, I was told to "Smile through it" and "Be happy that I'm not working 60 hours a week like other departments. - No room to grow at all unless you are an engineer.

I agree – we have great people at DOWL! As with most consultancies, our project workload does occasionally necessitate putting in additional hours so we can meet our clients’ needs. I’m sorry you feel your manager did not work with you to take advantage of some our flexible work options or coordinate workshare. The facts do not support your claim that you cannot grow unless you are an engineer. We have many people in leadership roles who do not have PEs, including Practice Area Leaders, Board Members, and most of our C-suite staff.

Great projects and supervisors, but growth prioritizes retention issues

Cons

The corporate branch of the company seems to prioritize growth over retention of current employees. 10-20 years of experience is almost nearly a requisite for ownership.

I’m glad you value DOWL’s people and projects as much as I do. They are central to who we are and to our continued success. That is why recruiting and retention are key parts of our strategic plan. Exceptional people help us win meaningful projects, and together, those strengths support our growth and help us remain a company that attracts both top talent and great work. In that way supporting growth is prioritizing employees and prioritizing employees helps us grow. For ownership, we do not set requirements that limit our ability to recognize the ways someone can be a standout contributor, regardless of tenure. At the same time, owners must eventually divest so others can invest. To support the firm’s long-term health, we have worked hard to turn over shares and create opportunities to recognize staff. To support retention and recognition, we also added a synthetic equity program a few years ago as an additional incentive and reward for top-performing employees. We also use our generous bonus structure to recognize those making the strongest contributions. DOWL is fortunate to attract many smart, hardworking people. I recognize that many employees are interested in ownership and will continue to expand our two lanes of ownership to those who contribute the most. On a personal level, from the looks of your review you appear to be a current employee at DOWL. I visit every DOWL office at least a couple times a year. I would love the opportunity to have a conversation with you about your goals and how DOWL can support you in your personal goals and growth.

I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the projects you worked on when you were with DOWL! Exciting work is definitely something we value as a company. We strive to get the right tools in place to understand current and future workload so that we can maintain a healthy work/life balance for staff. As you point out, work share between our geographic locations to smooth out heavy workload where possible. As with most consultancies, our project workload does occasionally necessitate putting in additional hours to ensure we meet our clients’ needs. However, we also offer flexible work options, giving our team members the opportunity to rest and recharge during less demanding periods. We are proud of our commitment to maintaining and procuring equipment and resources. We have a thoughtful approach to new technologies to be sure there is a clear business case for purchases. It is a deliberate process, but I can assure you we have a robust equipment budget with ample resources dedicated annually for new equipment and technologies.
