Pros

Great natural surroundings, engaging students and coworkers, decent benefits. That's about all I can think of. It's easy to get bored and overwhelmed by the isolation of Hanover.

Cons

Middle of nowhere, extremely cold winters, expensive location to live, far away from cities, inconvenient to travel to, and very slow-paced.

good benefits, good reputation, employee perks include a discount program and access to state of the art fitness facility. situated in a cute town.

Cons

No teaching opportunities for post docs. few opportunities for collaboration with in the institution. core research facilities are lacking especially access to cutting edge technology.

Pros

Dartmouth College is situated in an idyllic valley environment- it is so beautiful and there are so many outdoor activities to pursue year-round. It is part of this physical landscape that makes Dartmouth such a special place to work and grow due to the type of people that are attracted to the area. You constantly run into fellow co-workers due to the small geographic location, so bonds are strong. It really feels like everyone has a vested interest in helping their co-workers. I feel that all employees are valued and treated fairly, and the benefits package is one of the best I've ever seen. Dartmouth also attracts world-class talent to their concert venue, inspiring leaders for speeches and talks, and amazing artisans to the area.

Cons

Although it can also be a positive (see above!), the smaller area and surrounding community is probably also one of the biggest drawbacks. You can be sure that you'll see a fellow employee wherever you go (and consequently have to be on your best behavior- which makes it tough to be a young person looking to let loose). If you're an in-betweener (aka- recent grad) you may have a harder time transitioning from college life to "real life" and experience a strange sense of connection and detachment from the College (which I imagine would be true of any recent grad working at a University- be it their alma mater or not). I think this feeling was amplified by the fact that I did not graduate from Dartmouth, but I digress...
